Patriot League Baseball Players of the Week Announced (3.30.21)

Bucknell claims two weekly honors while Lehigh earns one

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bucknell junior outfielder Chris Cannizzaro and Lehigh junior right-handed pitcher Mason Black collected Patriot League Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively when the League announced weekly honors on Tuesday. Bucknell freshman infielder Anthony Sherwin earned rookie of the week honors.
 
Cannizzaro collected Patriot League Baseball Player of the Week honors after batting .647 (11-for-17) with eight runs, six RBIs and six doubles during the Bison’s four-game week. The junior outfielder posted four multi-hit games while slugging 1.176 and reaching base at a .684 clip.
 
Black claimed his second Patriot League Pitcher of the Week honor of the season after tossing a 7.0-inning complete game to earn a 4-1 win over Lafayette.  The junior right-hander allowed one run on three hits and struck out 10 batters in the Mountain Hawks’ win.
 
Sherwin drove in eight runs and scored six in four games for the Bison last week to pick up Patriot League Rookie of the Week. The freshman infielder batted .333 (4-for-12) while slugging 1.000 with two doubles and two home runs.
 
Bucknell junior LHP Chris Difiore, Holy Cross sophomore RHP Jack DiLauro, Lehigh junior infielder Joe Gorla, Navy senior RHP Charlie Connolly and Navy freshman outfielder Zane Raba received weekly honorable mentions for their performances last week.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Chris Cannizzaro, Bucknell, Jr., OF, Staten Island, N.Y./Poly Prep
*Cannizzaro batted .647 (11-for-17) through four games with eight runs and six RBIs while slugging 1.176 and reaching base at a .684 clip.
*The junior outfielder posted four multi-hit games last week with six doubles, one home run and two stolen bases.
*He went 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs on two doubles and a home run against Navy on Sunday.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Mason Black, Lehigh, Jr., RHP, Archbald, Pa./Valley View
*Black picked up a 4-1win in a 7.0-inning complete-game, allowing one run on three hits while striking out 10 and walking three against Lafayette.
*The junior right-hander took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and held the Leopards scoreless until the seventh inning for his second win of the season.
*The complete game was the second of Black’s career and the first since 2019.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE BASEBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Anthony Sherwin, Bucknell, Fr., INF, Harrison City, Pa./Penn-Trafford
*Sherwin drove in eight runs and scored six while batting .333 (4-for-12) with two doubles and two home runs in four games last week.
*The rookie infielder slugged 1.000 and posted a .467 on-base percentage, drawing three walks during the week.
*He went 2-for-3 with three runs and five RBIs with a double and a home run in Bucknell’s 11-1 win over Navy in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

*Difiore earned an 11-1 win over Navy by throwing 6.0 innings and allowing one run on six hits with two strikeouts, while walking one.
 
Jack DiLauro, Holy Cross, So., RHP, Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury
*DiLauro allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits over 6.1 innings pitched while striking out five against Army West Point. He did not receive a decision in the Crusaders’ 6-5 loss in 10 innings.
 
Joe Gorla, Lehigh, Jr., INF, Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley
*Gorla went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a double in Lehigh’s 4-1 victory over Lafayette on Saturday. He batted .571 (4-for-7) to help the Mountain Hawks sweep a two-game series against the Leopards.
 
Charlie Connolly, Navy, Sr., RHP, Wayne, Pa./Radnor
*Connolly earned a 7-1 victory over Bucknell by tossing 6.0 innings of four-hit ball, allowing one run, while striking out a season-high 10 batters and walking one. Opponents have hit .196 against Connolly this season.
 
Zane Raba, Navy, Fr., OF, San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Regan
*Raba batted .545 (6-for-11) with three runs and two RBIs to help Navy take two of three games from Bucknell. He slugged .727 and reached base at a .545 clip during the three-game series. Raba went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs in the Mids’ 15-10 win over the Bison on Sunday.
