Patriot League Announces Field Hockey Academic Honors (11.2.22)

Boston University’s Rachel Borzymowski named Scholar-Athlete of the Year

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Boston University senior back Rachel Borzymowski was selected 2022 Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year, in addition to being voted onto the 12-member Academic All-Patriot League Team when the League office announced honors on Wednesday.
 
Borzymowski (biology, 3.94 GPA) is the first Terrier to claim the top field hockey academic award. Boston University graduate student midfielder Casey Thompson (business admin. & management, 3.82 GPA) became the first Patriot League field hockey student-athlete to earn academic All-League accolades for the fourth time. American junior goalkeeper Bryn Underwood (business & entertainment, 3.93 GPA), Bucknell senior goalkeeper Clara McCormick (political science, creative writing, 3.93 GPA) and Lafayette senior forward Felicitas Hannes (math & economics, 3.86 GPA) all made the academic team for the second time.
 
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor. These honors recognize student-athletes who excel in their sport and the classroom. The awards are voted on by Patriot League field hockey sports information directors, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.
 
2022 Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year
Rachel Borzymowski, Boston University, Sr., Back, Fallston, Md./Notre Dame Prep
*Borzymowski is a three-time Academic All-Patriot League selection, as a biology major with a 3.94 cumulative GPA.
*The senior back is a two-time All-Patriot League selection, earning second-team honors this season for a Terriers’ team that allowed a League-low seven goals in League play. She recorded two goals and one defensive save.
*She is a two-time NFHCA Scholar of Distinction, three-time NFHCA National Academic Squad and three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selection.
*The Fallston, Md. native has registered three goals, one assist and nine defensive saves during her career.
 
Six All-League Honorees Make Academic Squad
Six of the 12 Academic All-Patriot League honorees received All-Patriot League honors, including American junior Bryn Underwood (business & entertainment, 3.93 GPA), the goalkeeper of the year. Borzymowski, Bucknell senior forward Mackenzie Kile (environmental engineering, 3.56 GPA), Holy Cross senior defender Gabby Venezia (economics, 3.71 GPA), Lafayette senior defender Simone Hefting (international affairs, psychology, 3.69 GPA) and Lehigh senior goalkeeper Maddie Kahn (management, 3.59 GPA) all made the All-League squad.
 
Five Student-Athletes Make Academic Squad for the First Time
Hefting and Venezia are among five student-athletes to received Academic All-Patriot League honors for the first time. American senior midfielder Merel Dupont (communication studies, 3.77 GPA), Boston University senior forward Mikayla Crowley (biomedical engineering, 3.84 GPA) and Colgate senior defender Amanda Allen (molecular biology, 3.68 GPA) all made the squad for the first time this season.
 
Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
