Patriot League Announces Softball Players of the Week (3.22.22)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Lehigh swept this week’s softball awards when the League announced the awards on Tuesday.

Lehigh senior outfielder Jaelynn Chesson was named Patriot League Softball Player of the Week while sophomore Katelyn Young earned pitcher of the week laurels for the second time this season. Freshman catcher Rory Dudley rounded out the awards as rookie of the week for the second time this year.
 
Army West Point junior catcher Leila Hurst and senior pitcher Emily Iannotti, Colgate freshman utility player Jillian Herbst and Holy Cross sophomore outfielder Jessica Mott received honorable mention honors.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jaelynn Chesson, Lehigh, Sr., OF, Franklin, Tenn./Independence
* Chesson led the Mountain Hawks in hits (8) and RBI (8) as she went 8-for-16 at the plate with a trio of home runs during a six-game stretch last week.
* The senior homered in both games against Big Ten’s Ohio State and Purdue on Thursday, driving in the only run versus Ohio State and hitting an insurance two-run homer in the 8-5 win over Purdue.
* She ended the week with two RBI against St. Thomas plus a home run that put Lehigh ahead for good.

PATRIOT LEAGUE SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Katelyn Young, Lehigh, So., P, Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown
* Young threw a team-high 19.1 innings over Lehigh's six games in Florida going 3-0 with 17 strikeouts.
* In the 8-0 five-inning win over Niagara, the sophomore earned a complete-game four-hit shutout.
* In two wins on Saturday, Young finished with a career-high-tying seven strikeouts against Canisius (W, 5-2) and added four innings of scoreless, two-hit relief to earn the win versus St. Thomas.

PATRIOT LEAGUE SOFTBALL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Rory Dudley, Lehigh, Fr., C/UTL, Irvine, Calif./Irvine
* Dudley went 8-for-13 with six RBI and a team-high tying eight hits in the team’s 3-1 week. She also finished the week with a .615 batting average.
* The freshman recorded her first collegiate home run as she went 2-for-3 with four RBI in the 8-0 win over Niagara.
* She then went 2-for-3 against reigning NFCA Pitcher of the Week Georgina Corrick of South Florida.
* Dudley ended the week going 3-for-4 with a two-run double in the 8-5 win over St. Thomas.
 
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Leila Hurst, Army West Point, Jr., C/INF, Thomasville, Ga./Thomas County Central
* Hurst finished Army’s 3-3 weekend with seven RBI, three runs, three doubles, and one home run.
 
Emily Iannotti, Army West Point, Sr., P, Cypress, Calif./Cypress
* Iannotti finished the weekend 3-0 in the circle for Army, to go with 10 strikeouts while holding her opponents to a .271 batting average.
 
Jillian Herbst, Colgate, Fr., UTL, Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch
* Herbst went 8-for-17 (.417) in six games for Colgate. She led the team in hits (8), RBIs (5), slugging percentage (.706) and on-base percentage (.526).
 
Jessica Mott, Holy Cross, So., OF/2B, Trinity, Fla./Academy at the Lakes
* Mott turned in a .333 batting average, a .429 on-base percentage and a .583 slugging percentage in four games for Holy Cross. She recorded four hits with one RBI and one home run.
