Patriot League 2023 Announces Tennis Players of the Week (4.18.23)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Bucknell freshman Amar Tahirovic was named the Patriot League Male Tennis Player of the Week when the winners were announced on Tuesday. Boston University graduate student Shelly Yaloz earned female player of the week honors for the second week in a row and the third time this season.
 
Army West Point freshman Emma Sy, BU freshman Alejandro Licea, Bucknell sophomore Whitney King, Holy Cross freshman Patrick Ling, Lehigh sophomore Marc Blekhman, and Navy sophomore Luke Garner received honorable mentions.
 
Male Player of the Week
Amar Tahirovic, Bucknell, Fr., Stuttgart, Germany, Stuttgart
*The freshman went 2-0 at No. 1 singles against Lehigh and Holy Cross this past week.
*He defeated the Mountain Hawks’ Matt Kleiman 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and the Crusader’s Alessandro Bizzari,
6-0, 6-1.
*In No. 3 doubles play, Tahirovic and teammate Oscar Bain picked up a win over Lehigh and were leading their match against Holy Cross when the Bison clinched the point.
 
Female Player of the Week
Shelly Yaloz, Boston University, Gr., Queens, N.Y./Laurel Springs
*Yaloz went 4-0 in Patriot League play this past weekend versus Navy and Lehigh.
*In court-one singles play, the graduate student defeated Navy 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (13) and Lehigh 6-7, 6-2, 1-0 (4).
*In court-two doubles action, she and teammate Michelle Kleynerman clinched the doubles point for the Terriers against both Navy (6-2) and Lehigh (6-2).

*The freshman earned a court-three singles win 6-2, 6-0 over Bucknell’s Tyne Miller.
 
Alejandro Licea, Boston University, Fr., San Salvador, El Salvador/The Oaks Private School (Fla.)
*Licea picked up a No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-1) and a No. 1 doubles (6-4) win to help lead BU to a win over Holy Cross.
 
Whitney King, Bucknell, So., Sarasota, Fl. /IMG Academy
*In no. 1 singles, King defeated Colgate’s Amelia Galin 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. In No. 1 doubles play, the sophomore and teammate Abby Platt picked up wins over Navy (6-4) and Colgate (6-3).
 
Patrick Ling, Holy Cross, Fr., Pensacola, Fl. /Pensacola Catholic
*Ling and teammate Connor Nelson notched three doubles wins, including a 6-2 victory over BU.
 
Marc Blekhman, Lehigh, So., Glenview, Ill/Glenbrook South
*In No. 3 singles, Blekhman collected wins over Lafayette (6-2, 6-4) and Bucknell (6-4, 7-5). In No. 1 doubles action, he and teammate Matt Kleiman defeated Lafayette (6-1) and Bucknell 6-4.
 
Luke Garner, Navy, So., Arnold, Md. / Broadneck
*In Navy’s 4-3 win over League rival Army, Garner picked up wins at No. 3 singles (7-5, 5-7, 6-3) and No. 1 doubles (6-3).
