Patriot League Announces Men’s Lacrosse Players of the Week (4.24.23)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Lafayette received two Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse weekly awards, while Army West Point, Boston University, and Loyola Maryland earned one honor, as the League announced the winners on Monday.

Lafayette junior attack Charlie Cunniffe was named the offensive player of the week, while senior midfielder James Turco earned faceoff specialist of the week.
 
Army senior Knox Dent collected goalkeeper of the week honors, and BU senior long-stick midfielder Roy Meyer was named the defensive player of the week. This marked the second time that both Dent and Meyer earned their respective award this season.

Loyola freshman attack Matthew Minicus rounded out the weekly awards as the rookie of the week.
 
Army West Point sophomore defender A.J. Pilate and freshman midfielder Evan Plunkett, BU graduate student goalkeeper Matt Garber and senior attack Louis Perfetto, Colgate junior attack Michael Minicus, Holy Cross junior goalkeeper Dawson Friers and freshman long-stick midfielder Michael Roncin, and Lehigh fifth year faceoff specialist Mike Sisselberger earned honorable mentions.

The Patriot League men’s lacrosse players of the week are selected in a vote by each school’s sports information director, who is not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.

Offensive Player of the Week
Charlie Cunniffe, Lafayette, Jr., A, Newtown Square, Pa./Episcopal Academy
* Cunniffe scored four goals and dished out four assists in Lafayette’s 14-13 overtime win over Bucknell to help the Leopards clinch their first Patriot League Tournament berth since 2010.

Defensive Player of the Week
Roy Meyer, Boston University, Sr., LSM, Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade
* Meyer led the Terriers with five caused turnovers and also recorded three ground balls in the Terriers’ 14-11 win against Lehigh.
* Meyer was part of a defensive unit that held the Mountain Hawks to just two goals in the first half and only seven even-strength goals.
 
Faceoff Specialist of the Week
James Turco, Lafayette, Sr., M, Woodbury, N.Y./Hill Academy
* Turco went 20-for-31 from the faceoff ‘X’ in Lafayette’s 14-13 win over Bucknell.
* Turco also picked up 10 ground balls in the game.
 
Goalkeeper of the Week
Knox Dent, Army West Point, Sr., GK, Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek (USMAPS)
* Dent made 10 saves, picked up five groundballs and caused a turnover in the 11-6 victory over Navy.
* He only allowed one goal in three of the four quarters as he recorded a .625 save percentage.
 
Rookie of the Week
Matthew Minicus, Loyola Maryland, Fr., A, Darien, Connecticut/Darien
* Minicus led the Greyhounds with six goals to go with three assists during two games last week.
* Minicus scored two goals and added an assist in Tuesday night’s game against then-No. 8 Georgetown. * The freshman then scored four goals and matched his season-high with a pair of assists against Colgate.
 
Honorable Mentions

* Pilate caused three turnovers and grabbed four ground balls in the 11-6 win over Navy.
 
Evan Plunkett, Army West Point, Fr., M, Roswell, Ga./Roswell
* Plunkett scored two goals in Army’s 11-6 victory over Navy.
 
Matt Garber, Boston University, Gr., GK, Westport, Conn./Staples
* Garber stopped five shots in the first half as the Terriers held Lehigh to just two goals in the opening 30 minutes, including a stretch of nearly 22 minutes without a goal.
 
Louis Perfetto, Boston University, Sr., A, Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset
* Perfetto led all players with seven points on three goals and a game-high four assists in the 14-11 win over Lehigh. Perfetto also had four ground balls in a complete effort.
Michael Minicus, Colgate, Jr., A, Darien, Conn./Darien
* Minicus led the Raiders with four points on three goals and one assist against Loyola.
 
Dawson Friers, Holy Cross, Jr., GK, Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge
* Friers bounced back from allowing seven goals in the first quarter to record 12 saves while allowing just two goals in the next three quarters. The goalkeeper finished the game with a .571 save percentage in the 13-9 comeback win against UMass Lowell.
 
Michael Rincon, Holy Cross, Fr., LSM, West Linn, Ore./Jesuit Portland
* Rincon's season-high six caused turnovers helped the Crusaders climb back from being down 7-2 after the first quarter to record a 13-9 win over UMass Lowell.
 
Mike Sisselberger, Lehigh, 5th, FO/M, Center Valley, Pa./Southern Valley
* Sisselberger won 17-of-28 faceoffs and grabbed 10 ground balls against Boston U.
