Patriot League Announces 2023 Women’s Tennis Postseason Accolades (5.10.23)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Boston University earned two of the 2023 Patriot League Women’s Tennis Major Awards as the All-Patriot League teams and major awards were announced on Wednesday by the League office. Army West Point and Navy recorded one laurel each.
 
Navy sophomore Emily Tannenbaum was named this year’s Patriot League Women’s Tennis Player of the Year after being named the rookie of the year in the 2022 season.

Army’s duo of freshman Cooper Jackson and Paige Herremans were named doubles team of the year.

BU freshman Emily Zhao nabbed rookie of the year and head coach Lesley Sheehan earned coach of the year.
Six out of nine League teams are represented on the two All-League teams. BU placed four student-athletes on the teams followed by Army with three and Navy with two. Bucknell, Colgate and Lehigh all recorded one honoree each.

The Major Awards and All-League teams were voted on by the nine Patriot League head coaches who could not vote for their student-athletes or themselves.

2023 Patriot League Women’s Tennis Player of the Year
Emily Tannenbaum, Navy, So., Commack N.Y./Commack
* Tannenbaum finished the season 16-4 record in No. 1 singles in dual matches and a 5-1 Patriot League record.
* She set a Naval Academy record for most singles wins in a season with 29 and combined wins in a season with 51.
 
2023 Patriot League Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Year
Emily Zhao, Boston University, Fr., Harbin, China/Weil College Preparatory
* Zhao recorded a 10-3 overall and 5-0 League-play record at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles this season.

2023 Patriot League Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Year
Cooper Jackson/Paige Herremans, Army West Point
* Jackson and Herremans earned a 24-11 overall No. 1 doubles record for the Black Knights.
* The duo ended the 2023 season 4-1 in Patriot League play on court one.
 
2023 Patriot League Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year
Lesley Sheehan, Boston University
* Sheehan guided the Terriers to a 19-5 overall record and a 5-0 mark in Patriot League action.
* She directed the team to their sixth-straight Patriot League title with a 5-0 win over No. 3 Army West Point in the championship match.
* Sheehan has now won six Patriot League Coach of the Year honors.
