CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Army West Point baseball team (38-17, 21-4 PL) fell to the No. 1 seed University of Virginia Cavaliers (46-12, 19-11, ACC) 15-1 Friday afternoon in Game 1 of the Charlottesville Regional.
How it Happened
In the top of the first, the Black Knights got out in order.
In the bottom of the first, the Cavaliers attacked Army starter Robbie Buecker (5-4). The Cavaliers put six runs on the board. Relief pitcher Tyler Prichard came into the game for Robbie Buecker. Army retired the side with a groundout.
In the bottom of the second Virginia made it a 10-0 game after putting four runs on the board.
Army threatened Virginia starter Brian Edgington (W, 8-3) in the top of the third. With one out, Addison Ainsworth flew out to left center. Edgington ended the inning with a strikeout. The Cavaliers ended the inning with a strikeout.
With one out in the bottom of the third, Kyle Teel hit a single to right field putting a runner on first. The Black Knights ended the inning with a flyout and a strikeout.
Virginia's bats stayed hot in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Anthony Stephan hit a double to center field putting a runner in scoring position. Henry Godbout ripped an RBI single to right center, sending Stephan in to score, making it an 11-0 game. With two outs, Sean Dennehy came into the game for Tyler Prichard. Army retired the side with a groundout.
Ethan O'Donnell was hit by a pitch putting a runner on first. O'Donnell was caught stealing and was tagged out by Kevin Dubrule. Jake Gelof hit a single to third, putting a runner on first. With two outs, Ethan Anderson walked, putting runners on first and second. Casey Saucke reached on a fielder's choice, and Anderson was tagged out at second by Dubrule, ending the inning.
Cullen McKay came in to pitch relief for Brian Edgington. Army threatened McKay in the top of the sixth. With one out, the Black Knights back-to-back walks, putting runners on first and second. McKay cleared the side with a strikeout and a fly-out.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, the Cavaliers put a runner in scoring position. Godbout hit a double to left field, putting a runner in scoring position. Colin Tuft grounded out to Kevin Dubrule, advancing Godbout to third. With an RBI single by Griff O'Farrell, the Cavaliers made it a 12-0 game. With bases loaded, Sean Dennehy ended the inning with a strikeout.
The Black Knights attacked McKay in the top of the seventh. With one out, Ross Friedrick walked, putting a runner on first. Junior Braden Golinski ripped a single to left field, advancing Friedrick to second, and putting a runner in scoring position. Coleson Titus reached first on a fielding error by Jake Gelof, advancing to second on the error, Golinski advanced to third on the error, and Friedrick came in to score, making it a 12-1 game. Virginia retired the side with two strikeouts.
In the bottom of the seventh, leadoff hitter Ethan Anderson hit a double to right field, putting a runner in scoring position. Saucke ripped an RBI double down the left field line sending Anderson in to score, making a 13-1 game. Trevor Finan came in to pitch relief for Sean Dennehy. Chris Baker came into the game to pinch-hit for Anthony Stephan. Baker hit an RBI double to right field it a 14-1 game. Army ended the inning with Godbout lining out to Addison Ainsworth, a groundout, and a fly-out.
The Black Knights got out in order in the top of the eighth.
Chase Hungate came into the game for Cullen McKay. In the bottom of the eighth, Tommy Courtney hit a double to right center, putting a runner in scoring position. With bases loaded, Virginia put a run on the board after Anderson hit a sacrifice fly, making it a 15-1 game. The Army ended the inning with a strikeout and a flyout.
In the top of the ninth, Jack O'Connor came in to pitch relief for Chase Hungate.
The Black Knights battled against the Cavaliers. Leadoff hitter Kevin Dubrule ripped a single through the right side, putting a runner on first. With one out, Bennett Smith came into the game to pinch-hit for Braden Golinski. Smith walked, putting runners on first and second. Titus grounded out to second, Smith and Dubrule advanced to second and third, putting two runners in scoring position. The Cavaliers secured the win with a groundout.

Army will return to Disharoon Park for Game 2 of the Charlottesville Regional on Saturday, June 3 at 12 p.m. The Black Knights will face the loser of the ECU-Oklahoma game.
