Patriot League Announces Men’s and Women’s Tennis Weekly Awards (3.19.24)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. —Boston University swept this week’s Patriot League tennis awards when the League announced the winners on Tuesday.
 
For the fifth time this season, BU sophomore Corey Craig earned men’s player of the week after racking up four more wins at No. 1 singles. Terrier senior Victoria Carlsten was awarded women’s player of the week for the second week in a row after winning her singles and doubles matches against No. 55 FAU.
 
Bucknell sophomore Amar Tahirovic, Colgate junior Addie Eklund and sophomore Aidan Lee, Lafayette freshman Hanna Ganchi, Lehigh graduate student Matt Kleiman, Loyola Maryland senior Matt Cardano, and Navy senior Samantha Johns earned honorable mentions. 

Men’s Player of the Week
 Corey Craig, Boston University, So., Coconut Creek, Fla./Monarch
*The sophomore went 4-0 at No. 1 singles for the Terriers last week.
*Craig picked up court-one victories at UC Riverside (6-2, 6-0) and the University of Redlands (6-0, 6-1).
*In Friday’s doubleheader against UC San Diego, the Florida native earned a 6-3, 7-6 win and a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3) win on court one.
 
Women’s Player of the Week
Victoria Carlsten, Boston University, Sr., Malmo, Sweden/Korrespondengymnasiet
*In BU’s first ranked win of the season over No. 55 FAU (4-3), Carlsten won both her singles and doubles matches.
*In the upset on FAU’s home court, the senior earned a court-one singles win (6-3, 6-4) and a court-three doubles win (6-1).
*In the Terriers’ 4-3 win over Lynn, who is ranked No. 8 in DII, Carlsten recorded a No. 2 singles win (7-5, 6-2) and a No. 3 doubles win (6-2).
*In the No. 1 singles spot against FIU, Carlsten suffered a narrow loss, 7-5, 7-6 (4), to Oyinlomo Quadre, who is ranked No. 56 in the nation. 
 
Honorable Mention
Amar Tahirovic, Bucknell, So., Stuttgart, Germany/Stuttgart
*The sophomore won in straight sets at Temple (6-0, 7-5), UC Riverside (6-3, 6-3) and Westmont (6-2, 6-2).
*In the Bison’s first win over the Owls (6-1) since 1982, Tahirovic claimed the match-clinching point.
*He also teamed up with Brendan McDonald for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles against Temple.
 
Addie Eklund, Colgate, Jr., Bellevue, Wash./ Interlake
*In the Raiders’ 4-3 win over Haverford, Eklund won 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 3 singles spot to clinch the winning point for Colgate.
*In Colgate’s League win over Holy Cross, the junior earned a No. 3 singles win and a No. 1 doubles win.
 
Aidan Lee, Colgate, So., Daufuskie Island, S.C./ Smith Stearns Tennis Academy
*Lee picked up No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles wins against Southeastern and Haverford.
*In the Raiders’ League win over Holy Cross, the sophomore scored a court-three 7-6, 6-4 singles win and a court-one 6-5 doubles win.
 
Hanna Ganchi, Lafayette, Fr., Wayne, N.J./ Montclair Kimberley Academy
*In singles play, the freshman picked up a court-one win against Sioux Falls (6-1, 6-4) and a court-two win over Fairfield (6-2, 6-2).
*In doubles action, Ganchi earned a court-one win over Bentley, and court-two wins over Emporia State (6-4) and Fairfield (6-2).
 
Matt Kleiman, Lehigh, Gr., Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery
*Against IUPUI, Kleiman notched a 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 court-one singles victory and a 6-2 court-one doubles victory.
*In Lehigh's 7-0 sweep of Emporia State, he scored wins at No. 1 singles (7-6 (7-2), 6-1) and No. 1 doubles (6-0).
 
Matt Cardano, Loyola Maryland, Sr., Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South
*The senior tallied wins at No. 1 singles against Howard, Coppin State and Villanova.
*In Loyola's first-ever victory over Villanova (4-3) at the DI level, Cardano outlasted the Wildcats’ Josh Robinson, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-4.
 
 Samantha Johns, Navy, Sr., Simpsonville, S.C./ South Carolina Connections Academy
*Against Marist on court one, Johns’ 6-1, 6-3 victory helped Navy sweep the Red Foxes.
*In Navy’s sweep of Marquette, the senior teamed up with Sia Chaudry for a court-one doubles win (6-4).
*In court-two singles play, the senior forced three sets in a loss against Leena Bennetto of No. 40 Princeton (6-4, 2-6, 6-10).
