2025 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championship Day Three Recap (2.21.25)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After three days of the 2025 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships at Bucknell’s Kinney Natatorium, the Army West Point men’s swimming and diving program regained the lead while Navy women’s swimming and diving program maintained their advantage in the team standings heading into the final day of competition.

Army West Point is in second place (902.5) in the women's standings, followed by Bucknell in third with 736 points. Defending champion Navy ranks second on the men’s side with 1,013.5 points and Loyola Maryland sits in third with 810 points after the third day.

100-Yard Butterfly
American’s Mimi Watts returned to the top of the podium in the women’s 100-yard butterfly as the graduate student clocked a time of 53.22 to win the event for the second time in her career (2023). Army West Point freshman Angie McKane finished as the runner-up after touching the wall in 53.26, while Navy’s Caroline Irwin, the defending champion, rounded out the podium in third place with a time of 53.62.

On the men’s side, Army West Point freshman Daniel Verdolaga captured the title with a time of 46.88, becoming the first Black Knight to win the event since 2019. A pair of Loyola Maryland Greyhounds rounded out the podium as senior Patrick Hayburn (47.44) and sophomore Hans van Lierop (47.66) finished second and third, respectively.

400-Yard Individual Medley
Bucknell’s Clara Renner captured her first League championship as the freshman touched the wall first in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:16.85. Boston University junior Haley Newman (4:18.31), who captured the crown in 2023, finished as the runner-up, while Bucknell sophomore Virginia Hastings grabbed a third-place finished with a time of 4:18.65.

In the men’s 400-yard individual medley, Army West Point earned the top three finishers as senior Alex Edwards finished atop the podium with a winning time of 3:48.97. Defending champion and sophomore Kalvin Hahn (3:50.31) took second, while senior Clayton Bernauer grabbed bronze with a time of 3:50.91.

200-Yard Freestyle
For the second year in a row, Army West Point’s Molly Webber claimed the top spot in the women’s 200-yard freestyle with a winning time of 1:47.74. The junior became the first Black Knight in program history to win back-to-back titles in the event. Teammate and senior Clara Williams (1:48.45) secured the silver medal, while Lehigh senior Willa Werwaiss (1:49.01) took third for the Mountain Hawks.

In the men’s race, Navy’s Everet Andrew (1:35.36) reclaimed his title as the senior touched the wall .10 seconds faster than Army West Point sophomore Thomas Hadji (1:35.46) the runner-up. Army West Point senior and defending champion Wes Tate rounded out the top three with a time of 1:35.47. Andrew became the third Midshipman in program history to win the event at least three times after capturing titles in 2022 and 2023, joining Thomas Duvall (2014-16) and Mac Anthony (2009-12).

100-Yard Breaststroke
Army West Point’s Catriona Gilmore maintained the Black Knights’ win streak in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke as the junior clocked a time of 1:00.71. The Mids rounded out the podium as junior Lauren Walsh (1:00.93) took second and senior Syndey Bare (1:02.12) finished third.

On the men’s side, Black Knights junior Kohen Rankin three-peated after notching a championship and pool record time of 51:64. Navy sophomore Juan Morea (52.69) and Loyola Maryland freshman Michael Gozdan (53.39) rounded out the podium in third.

100-Yard Backstroke
In the women’s 100-yard backstroke, Loyola Maryland’s Lily Mead captured her third career title (2022-23) with a Patriot League overall, championship meet and school record time of 52.51. Navy sophomore Ela Habjan, the defending champion, grabbed the silver with a time of 54.67, while Navy senior Tiffany Shields (54.68) secured third place.

Army West Point freshman Johnny Crush became the second Black Knight in program history and the first since 1998 (Pete Peters) to win the event after swimming a time of 45.32. Midshipmen sophomore Ben Irwin touched the wall in 46.45 to finish as the runner-up and Loyola Maryland sophomore Joe Hayburn rounded out the podium at 46.81.

1-Meter Diving – Women
Navy junior MacKenzie Kim captured the one-meter dive title as she recorded a score of 296.30. Kim became the first diver since the Mids’ Hannah Montau to sweep both diving events at the League championships. Boston University’s Sophia Souza earned a runner-up finish with 290.90 points and Bucknell senior Regina Frias collected the bronze medal with 271.20 points.

200-Yard Freestyle Relay
For the second consecutive year, the women’s 200-yard freestyle saw the Loyola Maryland quartet of graduate student Lily Mead, senior Avery Stimmel, sophomore Haley Robinson and senior Charley Tulio finish first while breaking a school, pool, Patriot League meet and overall record that had stood since 2016 with a time of 1:30.83. Army West Point’s team of senior Meghan Cole, freshman Angie McKane, senior Clara Williams and junior Molly Webber (1:31.34) place second, while Navy’s seniors Caroline Irwin, Catherine Weaverling, Jennifer Luong and Tiffany Shields (1:32.31) took third.

In thrilling fashion, Navy’s squad of sophomore Lachlan Andrew, sophomore Simon Thompson, sophomore Ben Irwin and senior Everet Andrew lifted the Midshipmen to the title with a Patriot League meet and pool record time of 1:18.19. Loyola Maryland’s graduate student Caleb Kelly, senior Patrick Hayburn, freshman Brennan Coyle and sophomore Joe Hayburn (1:18.24) took second on the podium. Army West Point’s junior Ben Vorthmann, junior Kohen Rankin, senior Owen Harlow and sophomore Thomas Hadji (1:18.31) helped the Black Knights grab third place.

The final day of the 2025 Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championships resumes on Saturday with preliminaries at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m. Live coverage will be available each day on ESPN+.
