No. 2 Boston University Upsets No. 1 Army West Point to Earn 2025 Patriot League Women’s Tennis Championship

The Terriers rallied past the Black Knights to earn the 2025 Patriot League Women’s Tennis Championship

HAMILTON, N.Y. — No. 2 seed Boston University upset top-seeded Army West Point, 4-2, to claim the 2025 Patriot League Women’s Tennis Championship presented by Credit Union 1. The title marks the Terriers’ seventh in program history.

Boston University struck first by sweeping doubles, with Uma Bakaiyte and Gabriella Mikaul earning a 6-3 win on Court 1. Nina Gulbransen and Emily Zhao clinched the doubles point on Court 3 with a 6-4 victory. The doubles sweep gave the Boston University a 1-0 advantage.

The Terriers extended their lead to 2-0 after Madison Liu earned a straight-sets victory at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-0. Army West Point began to mount a comeback when Cooper Jackson rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to win 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 1 singles.
The Black Knights tied the match at 2-2 with a win on Court 4, as Vennmukiil Mathivanan prevailed 6-2, 0-6, 6-4.

Mikaul gave the Terriers a 3-2 lead with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, setting up Zhao to clinch the match. Zhao finished a back-and-forth contest at No. 5 singles, winning 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) to secure the championship for Boston University.

Mikaul was named the 2025 John "Pat" Rooney Award winner, which is presented to the Patriot League Championship MVP. The honor is selected by the winning team’s head coach following the title match. Mikaul went 4-1 during the tournament and was undefeated at No. 2 singles.

Boston University earns the League’s automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship. The full bracket will be announced Monday, April 28, on NCAA.com.
