BALTIMORE - Freshman
Timothy Shannehan of the Boston University men's lacrosse team topped Inside Lacrosse's final freshman impact rankings, the publication announced on Wednesday.
Two of Shannehan's teammates joined him among the top 50, as faceoff specialist
Madden Murphy was No. 20 and midfielder
Andrew Pape was No. 36. BU was the only Patriot League school to boast three rookies in the top 36.
Shannehan's recognition is no surprise after a sensational freshman season. He was named Patriot League and ECAC Rookie of the Year, joining Chris Gray (2018) as the lone Terriers to earn each of those awards. Shannehan was also a First Team All-Patriot League honoree and Second Team All-New England selection. He led all NCAA rookies with 61 points on 32 goals and 29 assists. He matched Gray and All-American
Vince D'Alto the fastest Terriers to reach 50 points, doing so in just 12 games. Shannehan recorded at least two points in 14 of his 16 starts, including a career-high five goals on Feb. 22 against Air Force. He set career bests in assists (5) and points (9) against Bucknell on March 8 and ended the season with seven goals and four assists across final three games.
Murphy was terrific at the faceoff X for the Terriers, winning 55.1% of his draws (129-for-234) and collecting 55 ground balls. He also scored a goal and added an assist for two points. Murphy ranked second in the Patriot League in faceoff percentage and was the third-best freshman in the nation at the X. He had a career effort in a 14-12 triumph over Colgate on the final day of the regular season, winning a season-best 16 of the 24 faceoffs he took and collecting a career-best six ground balls. Murphy earned PL Faceoff Specialist of the Week accolades after that win. He also matched a program record for the fastest goal to start a game, scoring just six seconds into a 12-7 victory over Lehigh on April 19. Murphy
Pape developed into one of the top midfielders in the Patriot League during his rookie campaign, starting 11 of his 15 appearances for the Terriers. He finished fourth on the team with 20 points on 17 goals and three assists, including five strikes on the NCAA's top-ranked man-up unit. Pape was particularly effective down the stretch, recording at least one point in each of the last four games and in eight of the Terriers' last nine contests. That included a pair of two-goal, one-assist efforts in the wins over Lehigh and Colgate to close the regular season. Pape was named PL Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week on March 24 after scoring a career-high four goals in a 10-9 overtime win at then-No. 2/3 Army West Point.
