Greek soccer club Olympiakos has picked up the first of two extension options on the contract of former American University player Peter Philipakos, Yanks-Abroad.com reported Monday.
Ted Philipakos, Peter's co-agent and brother, confirmed that the club renewed the contract through 2007. According to Ted, the renewal was necessary because Peter's original contract contained options after the first and third years.
Philipakos has been with Olympiakos for one season. He debuted with the first team on Jan. 19 in a Greek Cup match against Iraklis, and has made six appearances with the club since then.
Philipakos will now play for new coach Trond Sollied, a Norwegian who led Club Brugge to the Belgium title last season.
A midfielder whose last season with American was in 2003, Philipakos in his final season led the Eagles with six goals and three assists for 15 points.
