Catching up with Sal Caccavale

Sept. 21, 2005

WASHINGTON - Even though he is only a junior Sal Caccavale is chasing the record books at AU. The striker is five assists and 10 goals away from the top ten in Eagles history. AUEagles.com caught up with the Long Island native and talked with him about soccer and his life outside of the playing fields. Here's what he had to say.

AUEagles.com: Why and when'd you start playing soccer?
Sal Caccavale: I started playing soccer when I was four years old. I was not very good, at that point I was just one of those kids that played with the flowers and looked at the butterflies. As I got older I became faster and more athletic. I found myself watching soccer on TV and playing in the yard with my dad and brothers. If soccer is on TV, I'm watching it. Some people think I'm a little obsessed, but I just love the game.

AUEagles.com: What's your most memorable soccer moment?
SC: I have been lucky to have many great moments. My favorite would have to be playing in Italy when I was 16 with the regional team where I scored goals against Roma and Juventus, then playing the final against Manchester City. It's really cool to turn on the TV and see players I played against in that tournament now playing in some of the best leagues in the world.

AUEagles.com: What are your individual and the team goals for the season?
SC: I would love to win another Patriot League Championship and be the MVP of the conference as well as win games in the NCAA tournament and lead the team to a national championship.

AUEagles.com: Who's your favorite teammate to play with?
SC: I love to play with every one of my teammates. Soccer is played with 11 on each team and it takes all 11 players to win.

AUEagles.com: If you could be any athlete for a day, who would it be and why?
SC: David Beckham, I admire him in every way.

AUEagles.com: What's in your CD Player/ iPod most of the time?
SC: I play the guitar so I'm into a lot of 70s and 80s rock. I also listen to plenty of rap - Jay-Z or 50 Cent - but Styx is my all-time favorite band.

AUEagles.com: For video games, Madden, College Football, Fifa, or NBA Live?
SC: I don't play anything but Fifa except I never get a chance to play because Garth is always playing and will not let anyone else have a turn.

AUEagles.com: I'm in DC for a day and night, tell me where I should go?
SC: In the day I'd recommend Lucky Bar in Dupont Circle to watch an English Premier League or a Champions League game. The place has a great atmosphere and is full of soccer hooligans. I'd go to Georgetown for dinner. I like J. Paul's. After that I'd either walk around Georgetown or go back to Dupont and hit up some night spots. DC nightlife is great.
