FAIRFAX, Va. -
The American University men's soccer team fell behind, 1-0, in the opening period of first-round matchup in 2007 D.C. College Cup versus George Washington University Friday at George Mason, and could not convert on several late chances in a 2-0 loss to the Colonials.
American trailed, 1-0, when in the 40th minute GW's Andy Stadler headed in a cross from Abimbola Pedro.
Just four minutes later, midfielder Colin Zizzi (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) earned what turned out to be a significant yellow card. The significance of the card was evident just 10 minutes later when Zizzi was assessed another yellow card, this time on a controversial call, thus turning it into a red card and resulting in the Eagles playing a man short for the remainder of the contest.
Despite playing shorthanded, American still had a few chances to tie the game. A free kick by Daniel Shannon (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) in the 74th minute sailed just wide and a shot by Cameron Petty (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) in the 81st minute was blocked.
George Washington iced the game away when it scored with just nine ticks left on the clock.
American returns to action on Sunday at 5 p.m. in a match versus host George Mason University.
