CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — The 2017 Patriot League men’s soccer season began on Friday with all 10 members in action. Army West Point, Holy Cross, Lehigh and Loyola Maryland all picked up season-opening victories, with the Black Knights and Greyhounds needing extra time to do so. Loyola collected its second win on Sunday, while Bucknell captured its first of the season against Saint Francis the same day.
With 43 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Army’s Rex Epps (So., F) scored the game-winning goal against PAC-12 opponent San Diego State on Friday for a 1-0 season-opening victory. Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Stoll was credited with the win and the shutout, after playing all 99:17 minutes.
Like Army, Holy Cross begins the 2017 season with a 1-0 record after the Crusaders defeated Hartford 2-1 on Friday. Junior defender Owen Azrak scored the second goal of his collegiate career and gave Holy Cross a 2-0 advantage at the 14:23 mark, which proved to be the game-winner. He also played a crucial role on the defense that allowed just one goal and seven shots.

Fawole had a hand in both of the Greyhounds’ game-winning goals, as the team captured a pair of wins to open the 2017 season. The sophomore lifted Loyola to its first win in a season opener since 2011 by netting the golden goal in the 104th minute against La Salle, for a 5-4 double-overtime victory. On Sunday against St. John’s he assisted on classmate Nico Brown’s first-career goal, as Loyola is starting the season 2-0-0 for the first time since 2008.

Carlsson posted a trio of assists as the Greyhounds captured a season-opening victory for the first time in six seasons. One of the junior’s three assists in the 5-4 double-overtime victory over La Salle came on the game-winning goal in the 104th minute. On Sunday, he then helped Loyola shutout St. John’s for a 1-0 win and begin the season 2-0-0 for the first time since 2008.

Peterson played at center back in all 182 minutes of action against St. Bonaventure and Saint Francis, helping the Bison to a 1-1-0 start. The junior helped the defense hold both teams scoreless in regulation, as the team fell to the Bonnies 1-0 in overtime but defeated the Red Flash, 1-0.

Ott faced 31 shots and totaled 14 saves across a pair of games, as the Bison opened the 2017 season 1-1-0. The junior made five saves before allowing an overtime goal to St. Bonaventure on Friday. He then made nine stops in the 1-0 shutout against Saint Francis.

Brown recorded his first career goal in the Greyhounds season-opening, double-overtime 5-4 victory over La Salle on Friday. On Sunday against St. John’s, he then tallied an assist on Nico Brown’s eventual game-winner, to help the team start 2-0-0 for the first time since 2008. The freshman played 120 minutes.
