Navy Claims 2019 Patriot League Women’s Soccer Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — No. 1 Navy claimed the 2019 Patriot League Women’s Soccer Champions for the fourth time in program history as the Mids defeated Army West Point 2-1 on Sunday at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Navy captured the League’s automatic berth to the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Tournament. The Mids earn their postseason matchup and destination during the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Selection Show at 4:30 p.m. ET on Monday, Nov. 11. 

With about 11 minutes left in the game, Navy sophomore Victoria Tran turned and blasted a shot to the back of the net for the game-winning goal to give the Mids their first Patriot League Women’s Soccer Championship since 2007.  

Army opened the scoring as junior Morgan Walsh broke free from the Navy defense and fired a goal past senior Sydney Fortson to go ahead 1-0 at the 19:42 mark. Army West Point junior goalkeeper Sydney Cassalia stood tall in the first half as she staved off multiple Navy scoring chances to preserve the 1-0 advantage. 

Navy came roaring back in the second half, as sophomore Carolyn Mang scored a goal on an assist from junior Emily Keast to tie the game 1-1 at the 60:47 mark and set up the late heroics by Tran. Fortson was terrific in the second half as she preserved the victory for the Mids.

Morgan Walsh scored on an assist from Alyssa Carfagno to give the Black Knights an early 1-0 lead in the first half.
*Carolyn Mang tied the game up at 1 with as she blasted a shot by Sydney Cassalia right in front of the net earlin the second half.
*Victoria Tran scored the game-winning goal for the Mids, with an assist from Sadie McCaleb, at the 78:28 mark to give Navy the 2019 Patriot League Women’s Soccer Championship.
