BETHLEHEM, Pa. — No. 8 Lafayette earned a 4-0 win over No. 9 Holy Cross in the first round of the 2021 Patriot League Women’s Tennis Championship on Thursday.
The Leopards earned the first point of the match with two victories in doubles action. At No. 2, Lafayette’s Cecelia Lesnick and Samantha Snyder took a 6-1 win over Holy Cross’ Lauren Chilton and Hanna Beck, while Melanie Sparhawk and Ruthie Wilson nabbed a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles against the Crusaders’ Alexandra Smith and Meg O’Melveny.
In singles, Lesnick defeated Holy Cross’ Chilton 6-0, 6-2 on court four followed by a 6-1, 6-2 victory on court three from Jessica Siegel.
Sparhawk sealed the win for Lafayette with a 6-1, 6-2 No. 5 win over Beck.
The Leopards will now face top-seeded Boston University in the quarterfinals Friday at 8:30 a.m.
