2021 Patriot League Women’s Rowing Championship Preview (5.13.21)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Navy women’s rowing program will look to capture its sixth consecutive Patriot League Women’s Rowing Championship title on Cooper River in Camden, N.J. on Friday. Competition begins with the preliminary races at 8 a.m., followed by the Grand Final at noon. Each of the races can be seen live on ESPN+.

In 2019, the Mids placed first in the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four Grand Finals to accumulate 54 points and secure the title. Runner-up Bucknell finished with 48 points, Boston University and Georgetown tied for third place overall with 39 points each. Lehigh placed fifth with 30 points followed by MIT (22), Colgate (16), Holy Cross (13) and Loyola Maryland (8).

The 2021 Championship will feature two heats followed by the grand finals at noon for the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four competition. The top three finishers in each heat, regardless of time, will advance to Friday afternoon’s Grand Final.

The event will be scored on a weighted scale, with nine points for the winner of the varsity four race, 18 for the second varsity eight and 27 for the varsity eight. The school that accumulates the most total points in the three races will be crowned the Patriot League Champion. If there is a tie for first place in the final point total, the higher-place finisher of the Varsity Eight race will be named the Patriot League champion. Awards will also be presented to the Coach of the Year and Boat of the Year, starting at approximately 1 p.m.
 
The winner of the 2021 Patriot League Women’s Rowing Championship will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Rowing Championship that will take place at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. from May 28-30.
