Patriot League Announces Men’s Soccer Players of the Week (9.6.21)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Holy Cross and Navy each collected two of the Patriot League Men’s Soccer weekly awards, while Lafayette took home one, as the League announced the awards on Monday.
 
Holy Cross junior Matt McGonigle earned midfielder of the week honors, while Holy Cross freshman forward Evan Jones was named rookie of the week for the second-straight week.
 
Navy senior Matt Nocita collected defensive player of the week while teammate senior Tyler Fahning was named goalkeeper of the week.
 
Lafayette senior forward Marcos Kitromilides rounded out the awards as the Patriot League Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
 
Army West Point sophomore defender Jack Eaton and senior midfielder Oscar Pereira, Holy Cross senior forward Max Krause, and Lafayette sophomore midfielder Carter Houlihan and senior goalkeeper Alex Sutton all earned honorable mentions.
 
Offensive Player of the Week
Marcos Kitromilides, Lafayette, Sr., F, Nicosia, Cyprus
*Kitromilides totaled two goals and two assists in wins over Drexel and Mount St. Mary’s last week, including his first multi-goal game at Lafayette.
* The senior netted his two goals against Drexel on Monday in the Leopards’ 2-1 win. The first goal came in the 48th minute for his first of the season, followed by the second with just 0:01 left on the clock scoring on a penalty kick.
* The forward also recorded two assists in the team’s 3-0 victory over Mount St. Mary’s on Friday.

Midfielder of the Week 
Matt McGonigle, Holy Cross, Jr., M, Los Angeles, Calif./Notre Dame
* McGonigle tallied one goal and one assist in wins against Manhattan and Sacred Heart last week.
* The junior scored Holy Cross' second goal to tie the game at 2-2 in the come-from-behind 3-2 win over Manhattan.
* McGonigle then assisted on Max Krause's game-winning goal in the 2-0 victory over Sacred Heart.

Defensive Player of the Week
Matt Nocita, Navy, Sr., D, Porter Ranch, Calif./Oaks Christian
* Nocita helped lead Navy to a perfect 2-0-0 record last week including home victories over non-conference opponents Iona and La Salle.
* The senior defender anchored the Midshipmen backline that yielded just one score over the two contests.
* Nocita assisted the Navy offensive attack, scoring his fifth-career goal to open the Mids’ scoring effort against La Salle.
 
Goalkeeper of the Week 
Tyler Fahning, Navy, Sr., GK, Victoria, Minn./Minnetonka
* Fahning helped lead the Midshipmen to an undefeated 2-0-0 record last week including home victories over non-conference opponents Iona and La Salle.
* Fahning finished the week allowing one goal allowed while facing 10 shots on goal, including nine saves.
* The senior goalkeeper picked up his fourth career shutout with eight saves against La Salle.
 
Rookie of the Week
Evan Jones, Holy Cross, Fr., F, West Hartford, Conn./William H. Hall
* Jones tallied three assists in two wins over Manhattan and Sacred Heart last week.
* The freshman recorded an assist on Jack Ostrosky's game-winning goal in the 3-2 victory over Manhattan.
* The forward then assisted on both goals in the 2-0 win over Sacred Heart.
 
Honorable Mentions
Jack Eaton, Army West Point, So., D, Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton
* Eaton was part of a defensive line that held Fairleigh Dickinson and Longwood to one goal.
* The sophomore also netted his first collegiate goal in the 2-0 victory versus Longwood.

Oscar Pereira, Army West Point, Sr., M, Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings
* Pereira notched his second game-winning goal of the year in the team’s 2-0 win over Longwood on Saturday.
 
Max Krause, Holy Cross, Sr., F, Korschenbroich, Germany/Bischoefliche Marienschule
* In the 3-2 win over Manhattan on Wednesday, Krause earned the assist on Matt McGonigle's goal to tie the score at 2-2 with less than 10 minutes left in the second half. The senior also scored the game-winning goal in the team’s 2-0 victory over Sacred Heart on Saturday.
 
Carter Houlihan, Lafayette, So., M, North Wales, Pa./North Penn
* Houlihan recorded his first goal of the year in the Leopards’ 3-0 win over Mount St. Mary’s. The goal was the eventual game-winner for his first game-winning goal of the season.
 
Alex Sutton, Lafayette, Sr., GK, New York, N.Y./High School for Math, Science and Engineering
* Sutton went 2-0 in net on the week for Lafayette as he totaled five saves on 19 shots faced.
* The senior recorded his first shutout of the season in the Leopards’ 3-0 win over Mount St. Mary’s.
