BETHLEHEM, Pa — Army West Point tallied three of this year's six men's soccer major awards when the League office announced its postseason honors on Friday afternoon. Boston University earned two major awards and Navy nabbed one.
Army sophomore Gage Guerra received offensive player of the year, freshman defender Max Andrews was named rookie of the year and head coach Brian Plotkin earned coach of the year.
BU senior Griffin Roach nabbed Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, while teammate senior Francesco Montali was named goalkeeper of the year.
Navy junior David Jackson rounded out the major awards as the midfielder of the year.
Eleven student-athletes were named to the first all-League team, 12 were placed on the second team, and the third team has 10 members. Army, BU and Lafayette led the way with six all-League selections apiece, followed by American with five. Navy placed four members on the all-League teams, Colgate and Loyola Maryland had two each, followed by Holy Cross (1) and Lehigh (1).
The major awards and All-Patriot League teams were voted on by the 10 Patriot League men's soccer head coaches, who could not vote for their student-athletes or themselves.
2022 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year
Gage Guerra, Army West Point, So., F,
Houston, Texas
* Guerra finished the regular season leading the League in goals (9) and points (21).
* The sophomore’s goals and points tally also paced the Black Knights to the Patriot League’s regular-season title.
* In 32 appearances for Army, Guerra has scored 14 goals and dished four assists for 32 points.
2022 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year
David Jackson, Navy, Jr., M, Cypress, Texas
* Jackson, the 2020-21 Patriot League Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Year, led the team in goals (6), game-winning goals (3) and points (15) to go with three assists this season.
* In 39 career games, Jackson has recorded 13 goals and 12 assists for 38 points.
* Jackson was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region Third Team and the All-League Second Team in 2021.
2022 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year
Griffin Roach, Boston University, Sr., D,
Canton, Mass.
* Roach aided a defensive unit that held opponents to 0.88 goals per game as BU earned the No. 2 seed in the League’s men’s soccer championship.
* The senior defender helped the Terriers record six shutouts on the year.
2022 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year
Francesco Montali, Boston University, Sr., GK, Davie, Fla.
* In 15 games in goal this season, Montali collected 50 saves for a .833 save percentage and posted a 0.67 goals-against average for the Terriers.
* Montali capped the regular season with a League-leading seven shutouts.
* In 28 career appearances, the senior owns a 10-10-8 record, 105 saves and 10 shutouts, along with a .766 save percentage and a 1.13 goals-against average.
2022 Patriot League Rookie of the Year
Max Andrews, Army West Point, Fr., D, Wilton, Conn.
* Andrews helped back a defensive line that held opponents to 1.06 goals per game as Army went 5-1-3 in League play.
* The freshman defender aided in the Black Knights’ five shutouts on the year.
2022 Patriot League Coach of the Year
Brian Plotkin, Army West Point
* Plotkin led the Black Knights to a 5-1-3 record in Patriot League play and the No. 1 seed of the Patriot League Men’s Soccer Championship.
* In his second year at Army, Plotkin led the team to a regular season title for the first time since 1996.
* Plotkin holds an overall record of 16-10-8 at Army.
