Patriot League Announces GEICO Men’s Lacrosse Players of the Week (2.21.22)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Bucknell earned three of the five Patriot League GEICO Men’s Lacrosse weekly awards while Colgate earned two when the League announced the awards on Monday.

Colgate senior attack Brian Minicus was named the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week while teammate freshman goalkeeper Matt Lacombe earned goalkeeper of the week. Bucknell senior long-stick midfielder Frankie Higgins claimed defensive player of the week while teammate senior faceoff specialist Nick Crovatto received faceoff specialist of the week.

Bucknell freshman attack Connor Davis rounded out the awards as rookie of the week for the third-straight week.
 
Boston University senior midfielder Jack Cates and senior goalkeeper Matt Garber, Colgate junior faceoff specialist Thomas Colucci, Loyola Maryland junior attack Joey Kamish and senior short-stick midfielder Payton Rezanka and Navy sophomore defender Jackson Bonitz and junior goalkeeper Pat Ryan all earned honorable mention recognition.

Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week
Brian Minicus, Colgate, Sr., A, Darien, Conn./Darien
* Minicus recorded eight points on two goals and a career-high six assists in the team’s 11-8 win over Air Force.
* The senior assisted on Colgate's first two goals and on what proved to be the game winner in the fourth quarter.
 
Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week
Frankie Higgins, Bucknell, Sr., LSM, Hingham, Mass./Hingham
* Higgins recorded three caused turnovers to tie for the team lead, to go along with three ground balls in the 23-7 win over St. John’s.
* The senior was part of defensive unit that held St. John's without a goal for game's first 17 minutes.
 
Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Week
Nick Crovatto, Bucknell, Sr., FO, New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan
* Crovatto won 18-of-22 faceoffs (.818) and matched Bucknell's school record with 14 ground balls in the 23-7 win versus St. John’s.
* The senior also assisted on two of freshman Connor Davis' six goals.
 
Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week
Matt Lacombe, Colgate, Fr., Manlius, N.Y./ Fayetteville-Manlius
* Lacombe made 19 saves in the Raiders’ 11-8 win over Air Force.
* The freshman shutout Air Force in the fourth quarter making seven saves as Colgate rallied from an 8-7 deficit.
* Lacombe finished the game with a .704 save percentage as 13 of his 19 saves came in the second half.
 
Rookie of the Week
Connor Davis, Bucknell, Fr., A, Bethesda, Md./Bullis School
* For the second time this season, Davis matched the Bucknell freshman single-game record with six goals in the 23-7 win over St. John’s.
* Davis became the first Bison freshman to score at least six goals in a single game on multiple occasions.
* Two of the freshman’s goals came off of teammate senior Nick Crovatto’s faceoff wins.
 
Honorable Mentions
Jake Cates, Boston University, Sr., M, Germantown, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel
* Cates matched his career high with four goals, all of which came in the second half, in a 13-8 win over No. 19 Bryant.
* Three of Cates’ four goals came in the fourth quarter as he helped BU pull away from the Bulldogs to move to 2-0 on the season.
* Cates, who missed all but two games last year due to injury, has posted six goals and one assist for seven points in two tilts this year.
 
Matt Garber, Boston University, Sr., GK, Westport, Conn./Staples
* Garber made 14 saves in the Terriers’ 13-8 win against No. 19 Bryant and held the Bulldogs to just two second-half goals. 
* Garber collected three ground balls as he has averaged 13.0 saves per game in the Terriers’ two victories this season.
 
Thomas Colucci, Colgate, Jr., FO, Westfield, N.J./Seton Hall Prep
* Colucci won 85 percent of his faceoffs (17-20) in the 11-8 victory versus Air Force on Saturday.
* The junior went 5-for-5 in the fourth quarter as Colgate rallied from an 8-7 deficit.
* Colucci also collected 11 of Colgate's 32 ground balls.
 
Joey Kamish, Loyola Maryland, Jr., Attack, Wixom, Mich./Detroit Central Catholic
* Kamish scored a team-high four goals on just six shots Saturday at Johns Hopkins, and he also picked up five ground balls.
* He scored twice in the first half, once to give the Greyhounds a lead and again to put the team up by two. He then scored the first goal of the second half, unassisted, to break a 6-6 tie, and he then connected as time expired in the third quarter to put Loyola in front, 9-8.
 
Payton Rezanka, Loyola Maryland, Sr., SSDM, San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic
* Rezanka finished with three caused turnovers and two ground balls at Johns Hopkins.
* He scored the game’s first goal, taking a pass from junior Mustang Sally to score in transition less than a minute into the game.
 
Jackson Bonitz, Navy, So, D, Shrewsbury, Pa./McDonogh School (Md.)
* Bonitz finished the 2-0 week with five ground balls, two caused turnovers and one goal as the Midshipmen took down Hofstra (13-6) and Manhattan (9-6).
* He scored his second-career goal and recorded two caused turnovers against Manhattan, moving him into a tie for 18th on Navy's all-time caused turnovers leader board (19 in 13 career games).
 
Pat Ryan, Navy, Jr., GK, Groton, Mass./Groton School
* Ryan made 14 saves on the weekend with seven in each game as the team defeated Hofstra (13-6) and Manhattan (9-6) last week.
* The junior goalkeeper was part of a defensive effort that held both Hofstra and Manhattan to six goals each.
