Patriot League Announces Men’s Soccer Players of the Week (9.5.22)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Loyola Maryland claimed four of the Patriot League Men’s Soccer Weekly Awards, while Lafayette recorded one award, as the League announced the winners on Monday.
 
Loyola graduate student forward Kelan Swales was named offensive player of the week after totaling five points in two games. Senior midfielder Albert Kang won midfielder of the week and sophomore defender Jordy Luchies earned defensive player of the week. Sophomore Alex Bobocea was named goalkeeper of the week after recording shutouts against Delaware and Old Dominion.  
 
Lafayette freshman midfielder Sebastian Tis received the rookie of the week.
 
American junior forward Robert Matei, Army West Point junior defender Nick Atkinson, Boston University graduate student Evan Morrison, Colgate junior forward Aidan Davock, and Lafayette senior defender William Echeverria and junior forward Hale Lombard all earned honorable mentions.

Offensive Player of the Week
Kelan Swales, Loyola Maryland, Gr., F, Leeds, England/Cardinal Heenan Catholic
* Swales finished the week with five points (2 goals, 1 assists) as Loyola defeated Delaware and Old Dominion.
* In the 3-0 victory over Delaware, the forward tallied one goal and one assist. Swales’ goal happened just 90 seconds into the second half.
* Swales scored the game-winning goal against Old Dominion in the 60th minute.

Midfielder of the Week 
Albert Kang, Loyola Maryland, Sr., M, Vancouver, B.C./University Hill Secondary School
* Kang scored a goal in the Greyhounds’ 3-0 win over Delaware. He found the back of the net on a rebound after a free-kick attempt from Swales.

Defensive Player of the Week
Jordy Luchies, Loyola Maryland, So., D, Emmen, Netherlands/University of Groningen

* Luchies was an anchor for the Greyhounds’ defense this past week as they shut out both Delaware and Old Dominion.
* Luchies also recorded an assist on Swales’ game-winning goal against Old Dominion.
 
Goalkeeper of the Week 
Alex Bobocea, Loyola Maryland, So., GK, Queens, N.Y./Apex Learning
* Bobocea recorded a pair of shutouts for the Greyhounds’ wins over Delaware and Old Dominion.
* The sophomore did not allow a goal on a combined 14 shots over the week
 
Rookie of the Week
Sebastian Tis, Lafayette, Fr., M, Newton, Square, Pa./Conestoga
* Tis scored the game-winning goal in the Leopards’ 2-1 win against Mount St. Mary's.
* The freshman’s goal was the first of his career.
 
Honorable Mentions
Robert Matei, American, Jr., F, Prairie Grove, Ill./Prairie Ridge
* Matei scored the game-winner in the Eagles’ 2-1 win on Friday at home against George Mason in the 86th minute. The game-winner was his second-straight after netting the game-winner for the Eagles in their 1-0 win over Old Dominion last week.
 
Nick Atkinson, Army West Point, Jr., D, Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road
* Atkinson logged 148 minutes at fullback across Army's two contests, scoring his first career goal with a header to tie the score in the first half against Cleveland State.
 
Evan Morrison, Boston University, Gr., D, Indianapolis, Ind./ASU Prep Academy
* Morrison played all 90 minutes anchoring the backline to help the Terriers extend their unbeaten streak to three games – the longest BU streak to open a season since 2010. The defender earned his first career point with an assist that led to Neal Carlson's goal for the 1-1 draw.
 
Aidan Davock, Colgate, Jr., F, Medway, Mass./The Rivers School
* Davock netted two goals in the last two games, including the game-tying goal against Marist in the '88 minute to force a tie. He also scored the lone goal against Binghamton to help the Raiders pull away with a 1-0 win.

William Echeverria, Lafayette, Sr., D/M, Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow
* The senior recorded an assist from a throw-in on Hale Lombard's first goal against Albany. He is part of a defensive unit that has only given up two goals so far this season.
 
Hale Lombard, Lafayette, Jr., F, Belleair Bluffs, Fla./The Hill School
* Lombard scored both goals in the team’s 2-0 win against Albany last Monday.
