Patriot League Field Hockey Players of the Week Announced (10.16.23)

Lafayette claims two weekly honors, American and Holy Cross earn one apiece

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lafayette earned two of the four Patriot League field hockey weekly awards when the League office announced honors on Monday. American and Holy Cross claimed one weekly accolade.
 
Lafayette junior midfielder Lineke Spaans picked up her second Patriot League Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week of the season after totaling seven points (three goals, one assist) to help the Leopards go 2-0 last week. She scored the game-winning goal in Lafayette’s 1-0 win over Boston University. Senior goalkeeper Emma Garvey earned goalkeeper of the week honors after posting a shutout against the Terriers to clinch a spot in the Patriot League Championship field.
 
Crusaders’ senior Haley Davis claimed her second straight Patriot League Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week after making her NCAA DI-leading ninth defensive save in a win against Queens and scoring on a penalty stroke against Colgate.
 
American freshman forward Emilia Winkler received her second Patriot League Field Hockey Rookie of the Week honor of the campaign after totaling three points on one goal and one assist in the Eagles’ 3-2 overtime win over Lehigh.
 
Bucknell freshman goalkeeper Sarah Althouse and junior forward Lily Neilson, Holy Cross senior forward Sarah Potter and senior goalkeeper Brooke Ross, Lafayette sophomore defender Makenzie Switzer and Lehigh senior midfielder Julia Gatelein all received honorable mentions for their performances last week. 
 
AMERICAN AND LAFAYETTE CLINCH PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP BERTHS
American and Lafayette sealed berths in the four-team Patriot League Championship with League wins last weekend. The Eagles earned a 3-2 overtime victory over Lehigh to improve to 4-0 in League play. American needs one win to clinch at least a share of the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Championship. Lafayette also earned a spot in the championship with a 1-0 victory over the Terriers on Saturday. The 2023 Patriot League Field Hockey Championship begins with semifinal-round action on Thursday, Nov. 2, with the championship game scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 4. All three games will be played at the home site of the No. 1 seed and be available live on ESPN+.
 
AMERICAN’S JENNINGS EARNS 300TH CAREER VICTORY
American field hockey head coach Steve Jennings recorded his 300th career victory when the Eagles defeated Lehigh in a 3-2 overtime decision on Friday night. All 300 of Jennings’s 300 coaching wins have come during his 25-year tenure at American. He is the 42nd NCAA field hockey coach to reach 300 victories.

*Spaans scored three goals and recorded one assist to lead Lafayette to victories against Boston University (1-0) and Providence (3-1) last week.
*The junior midfielder scored the lone goal in the Leopards’ 1-0 victory over the Terriers to clinch a berth in the Patriot League Championship.
*She scored two goals and had one assist in Lafayette’s 3-1 win over the Friars.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE FIELD HOCKEY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Haley Davis, Holy Cross, Sr., Defender, Gambrills, Md./Severn School
*Davis recorded her NCAA-leading ninth defensive save in a 5-0 victory over Queens.
*She scored on a penalty stroke amid the Crusaders’ 3-0 second-quarter scoring run against Colgate.
*The senior defender was part of a Holy Cross corner defensive unit that went 18-for-18 in stopping opponents’ corner opportunities in last week’s two matches.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE FIELD HOCKEY GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK
Emma Garvey, Lafayette, Sr., Goalkeeper, Peabody, Mass./Buckingham Browne and Nichols
*Made two saves to record a shutout in the Leopards’ 1-0 victory over Boston University to clinch a berth in the Patriot League Championship.
*She allowed one goal and made four stops in Lafayette’s 3-1 victory over Providence.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE FIELD HOCKEY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Emilia Winkler, American, Fr., Forward, Berlin, Germany/Kant-Oberschule
*Winkler recorded one goal and one assist in American’s 3-2 overtime victory over Lehigh to clinch a berth in the Patriot League Championship.
*She assisted the Eagles’ first goal of the game to tie the score at one.
*The freshman forward scored an unassisted goal in overtime to lift the Eagles to their fourth League win of the season.

*Althouse made seven saves and held Miami (Ohio) to one goal in Bucknell’s 2-1 victory over a RedHawks’ team that sits atop the MAC field hockey standings.

*Neilson had a hand in both Bison goals in a 2-1 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Sunday. She scored her eighth goal of the season to tie the score at one before assisting the game-winner.
 
Sarah Potter, Holy Cross, Sr., Forward, North Reading, Mass./Cushing Academy
*Potter scored three goals and dished out one assist in Holy Cross’s victories over Queens University (5-0) and Colgate (4-0) last week. She finished with two goals and an assist against Queens and added a goal against the Raiders.

*Ross posted a 1.000 save percentage with 11 saves to lead Holy Cross to victories over Queens (5-0) and Colgate (4-0) last week to extend her shutout streak to three games.  
 
Makenzie Switzer, Lafayette, So., Defender, West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area Secondary Center
*Switzer led a Lafayette defensive unit that limited Boston University to four shots (two on goal) in a 1-0 victory to clinch a berth in the Patriot League Championship. She also helped the Leopards’ backline hold Providence to five shots on goal and one goal in a 3-1 victory. The Leopards denied all seven Friars’ penalty corners.
