BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Boston University tallied four of this year's six men's soccer major awards when the League office announced its postseason honors on Friday afternoon. Loyola Maryland and Navy nabbed one each.
BU senior forward Eitan Rosen received offensive player of the year, while teammate senior Griffin Roach collected the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year. Senior goalkeeper Francesco Montali was named goalkeeper of the year and head coach Kevin Nylen earned coach of the year honors.
Roach and Montali received their respective honors for the second straight year.
Navy senior David Jackson recorded back-to-back midfielder of the year honors, and Loyola freshman defender Chris Ogor rounded out the major awards as the rookie of the year.
Twelve student-athletes were named to the first and third all-League teams, and 11 were placed on the second team. American led the way with seven all-League selections followed by Boston University with six. Loyola Maryland placed five members on the all-League teams, while Lafayette and Navy had four members each. Colgate (3), Holy Cross (2), Lehigh (2), Army West Point (1) and Bucknell (1) rounded out the all-League team.
The major awards and All-Patriot League teams were voted on by the 10 Patriot League men's soccer head coaches, who could not vote for their student-athletes or themselves.
2023 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year
Eitan Rosen, Boston University, Sr., F, Toronto, Ontario/Northwood School
* Rosen finished the regular season with eight goals and 18 points. His goals and points total both rank third in the Patriot League.
* The senior's goals and points tally also paced the Terriers to the Patriot League's regular-season title.
* In 55 appearances for BU, Rosen has scored 11 goals and dished five assists for 27 points.
2023 Patriot League Midfielder of the Year
David Jackson, Navy, Sr., M, Cypress, Texas
* Jackson, the two-time midfielder of the year, led the team in goals (9), assists (5) and points (23) to go with two game-winning goals this season.
* His nine goals and five assists are second in the Patriot League this season, while his points total tied for first.
* In 60 career games, Jackson has recorded 22 goals and 17 assists for 61 points.
* Jackson was named to the All-League First Team and the United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-Atlantic Region in 2022 and was the League's rookie of the year in 2020-21.
2023 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year
Griffin Roach, Boston University, Sr., D,
Canton, Mass.
* Roach, a two-time defensive player of the year, aided a defensive unit that held opponents to 0.88 goals per game for the second-straight year as BU earned the No. 1 seed in the League's men's soccer championship.
* The senior defender helped the Terriers record six shutouts on the year.
* On the offensive side, he scored a pair of goals.
2023 Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year
Francesco Montali, Boston University, Sr., GK, Davie, Fla.
* In 15 games in goal this season, Montali collected 34 saves for a .739 save percentage and posted a 0.80 goals-against average for the Terriers.
* Montali, the repeat goalkeeper of the year, capped the regular season with six shutouts.
* In 44 career appearances, the senior owns a 20-12-12 record, 141 saves and 17 shutouts, along with a .762 save percentage and a 0.99 goals-against average.
2023 Patriot League Rookie of the Year
Chris Ogor, Loyola Maryland, Fr., D, Manchester, England/St. Ambrose College
* Ogor helped back a defensive line that held opponents to 0.76 goals per game as Loyola went 6-1-2 in League play.
* The freshman defender aided in the Greyhounds' seven shutouts on the year.
2023 Patriot League Coach of the Year
Kevin Nylen, Boston University
* Nylen led the Terriers to a 7-1-1 record in Patriot League play and the No. 1 seed of the 2023 Penfed Credit Union Patriot League Men's Soccer Championship.
* In his fourth year at BU, Nylen led the team to a regular-season title for the first time since 2014.
