Patriot League 2023 Announces Tennis Players of the Week (3.28.23)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Navy swept this week’s Patriot League Tennis Players of the Week as the winners were announced on Tuesday. Navy sophomore Luke Garner was named male player of the week, while sophomore Emily Tannenbaum was awarded female player of the week for the second time this season.
 
Army West Point freshman Maria Drobotova and junior Jake Huarte, Boston University junior Victoria Carlsten and freshman Corey Craig, Colgate sophomores Jordan Ben-Shmuel and Benito Vlassis, Lehigh sophomore Marc Blekhman and Holy Cross freshman Camilo Illanes received honorable mentions.  
 
Male Player of the Week
Luke Garner, Navy, So. Arnold Md./Broadneck
*Garner gave the Midshipmen the doubles point as he and teammate Sasha Panyan defeated Boston University’s Alejandro Licea and Dion Loutas (6-3) on court one last weekend.
*In the team’s 4-2 win over BU, Garner followed with a 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Licea at the No. 3 flight
to make the score 3-1.
 
Female Player of the Week
Emily Tannenbaum, Navy, So., Commack, N.Y./Commack
*Tannenbaum went 4-0 in Patriot League play while picking up her 24th singles win of the season.
*The sophomore earned a pair of court-one singles wins over Lehigh (5-7, 6-4, 10-8) and Bucknell
(6-2, 6-4).
*In court-one doubles play, Tannenbaum and partner Samantha Johns defeated Lehigh’s Anushka and Megha Dania 6-2, along with Bucknell’s Whitney King and Abby Platt 7-6 (7-3).
 
HONORABLE MENTION
Maria Drobotova, Army West Point, Fr., Boca Raton, Fl.
*The freshman defeated Holy Cross’ Ahana Nagarkatti 6-1, 6-0 on court one, along with Loyola’s Lauren Manwiller 6-3, 6-1 on court two. She and partner Cooper Jackson picked up a pair of court-one doubles wins over the Holy Cross and Loyola.
 
Jake Huarte, Army West Point, Jr. Tustin, Calif./ Mater Dei
*In the No. 3 singles position, Huarte picked up wins over Holy Cross’ William Kelleher (6-2, 6-0), and Loyola’s Nick Lawliss (6-2, 6-1). In No. 2 doubles play, the junior and partner Nathan Jose earned a 6-3 win over Loyola.
 
Victoria Carlsten, Boston University, Jr., Malmo, Sweden/Korrespondensgymnasiet
*Carlsten won both her No. 3 singles matches over Yale (6-0, 6-3) and UConn 7-6 (5), 6-4.
 
Corey Craig, Boston University, Fr., Coconut Creek, Fl. /Monarch
*In No. 2 singles, Craig defeated Navy’s Gavin Segraves 6-3, 6-4.
 
Jordan Ben-Shmuel, Colgate, So., N.Y. /Avenues: The World School
*The freshman earned two No. 4 singles wins including a three-setter that clinched the Raider’s 4-3 victory over Lehigh.
 
Benito Vlassis, Colgate, So., Manlius, N.Y. / Christian Brothers Academy
*Vlassis picked up two No. 2 singles wins over Lafayette and Lehigh.
 
Marc Blekhman, Lehigh, So., Glenview, Il. /Glenbrook South
* With his court-three (6-1, 6-1) win over Colgate’s Max Litton, Blekhman has now won nine-straight singles matches improving his record to 12-2 on the season. In No. 2 doubles play, the sophomore and partner Sean Jaeger defeated the Raiders’ Aidan Lee and Josh Israel, 7-5.
 
Camilo Illanes, Holy Cross, Fr., Olney, Md. / Sherwood
*The freshman won all four of his matches last week going 3-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles. He posted a pair of Patriot League singles wins over Loyola and Lafayette on court six.
