No. 2 Lehigh Downs No. 4 Boston University to Win 2024 Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Championship (5.5.24)

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Lehigh senior attack Quinn Armstrong scored the game-winning goal with 1:29 remaining in the fourth quarter to defeat No. 4 Boston University, 11-10, to claim the 2024 Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Championship on Sunday at Michie Stadium in West Point, N.Y.

The second-seeded Mountain Hawks scored the last four goals of the game to overcome a three-goal, fourth-quarter deficit. Lehigh sophomore defender Luke McAuliffe collected five groundballs to earn Patriot League Championship MVP honors. Senior attack Scott Cole, junior faceoff specialist Sean Dow and sophomore defender Richard Checo joined McAuliffe on the Patriot League All-Tournament Team.

Head coach Will Scudder led the Mountain Hawks to the Patriot League crown in his first season at the helm of the program, and the team’s first League title since 2013. Lehigh clinched its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2021.

BU graduate student long-stick midfielder Roy Meyer finished with one goal, one assist, four ground balls and two caused turnovers to receive All-Tournament honors. Terriers’ graduate student attack Louis Perfetto and junior goalkeeper Will Barnes.

Army West Point sophomore goalkeeper Sean Byrne and junior long-stick midfielder Christian Fournier and Navy freshman faceoff specialist Zach Hayashi and junior defender Ian McGullam were also named to the all-tournament team.

The Mountain Hawks received the League’s automatic berth to the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship and will learn their opponent during the NCAA DI Men’s Lacrosse Championship Selection Show on Sunday, May 5 at 9:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The No. 2 Lehigh Mountain Hawks were crowned the 2024 Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Champions with an 11-10 win over No. 4 Boston University.
*Trailing 10-7 early in the fourth quarter, Lehigh scored the final four goals of the game to claim its first League title since 2013.
* Lehigh Junior midfielder Dakota Eierman and senior attack Quinn Armstrong scored three goals apiece, including one apiece during the Mountain Hawks’ game-ending 4-0 run.
* Senior attack Scott Cole broke Lehigh’s career scoring record with his lone goal of the game with 11:03 left in the final frame to reach 129 goals as a Mountain Hawk. Lehigh sophomore attack Andre Kelly added two goals and two assists for a four-point performance.
* Championship MVP, sophomore defender Luke McAuliffe collected five groundballs for the Mountain Hawks, while junior faceoff specialist Sean Dow went 11-for-19 at the stripe with nine ground balls. 
* Sophomore defender Richard Checo forced four turnovers and senior goalkeeper Nick Pecora made eight saves for Lehigh.
* Boston University junior attack Brenden Kelly registered a hat trick, while junior attack Zach Travaglini scored a pair of goals.
* Graduate student long-stick midfielder Roy Meyer added one assist, four ground balls and two caused turnovers for BU.
* Junior goalkeeper Will Barnes made 11 saves for the Terriers.

How It Happened
* BU took an early 3-0 lead with goals from Bourque, Kelly and O’Connell within the first six minutes of the first quarter.
* Lehigh’s Armstrong put the Mountain Hawks on the board at the 8:45 mark of the first quarter with his 27th goal of the season.
* Lehigh scored three straight goals to take a 4-3 lead on back-to-back-to-back goals from Amato, Kelly and Eierman within a three-minute span early in the second quarter.
* The Terriers surged back in front with two straight goals from Travaglini to head into halftime with a 5-4 advantage.
* Lehigh freshman attack Hunter Polonkey scored his sixth goal of the season 24 seconds into the third quarter. Eierman tallied his second goal of the game four minutes later (10:22).
* BU Cates tied the game at 6-6 with his 21st goal of the season with an assist from D’Alto at the 7:03 mark. BU regained the lead as Meyer found the back of the net off a pass from Perfetto 12 seconds later.
* The Terriers’ Perfetto scored the team’s third unanswered goal at the 2:12 mark for the 8-6 lead with an assist from Tommy Bourque.
* Lehigh’s Armstrong notched his 28th goal of the season on a man-up opportunity with 1:40 left in the third quarter.
* BU headed into the final quarter leading 9-7 with a last-second tally from Kelly. Fifteen seconds into the fourth quarter Kelly pushed the team’s lead to 10-7 off a pass from Meyer.
* Cole took sole possession of the Mountain Hawks’ career scoring record with a goal at the 11:03 mark.
* Eierman scored his third goal of the game with less than eight minutes left to put Lehigh down by one goal, at 10-9. The Mountain Hawks’ Kelly tied the game again with a goal at the 5:14 mark on a man-up opportunity.
* Armstrong scored the game-winning goal with 89 seconds left in the game on an assist from Grant Rodny.
