BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Loyola Maryland freshman Matthew Simpson and Lehigh junior Alana Hall claimed Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Golfer of the Week honors, respectively, when the League office announced accolades on Wednesday.
Patriot League Men’s Golfer of the Week
Matthew Simpson, Loyola Maryland, Fr., Toronto, Canada/St. Michael’s College School
*Simpson shot a 3-under par 139 (69-70) to finish second at the Maryland Individual Invitational at the par-71 University of Maryland Golf Course in College Park, Md.
*The freshman birdied three of his last 10 holes in his first collegiate event to move into second place behind Maryland’s Benjamin Siriboury.
Patriot League Women’s Golfer of the Week
Alana Hall, Lehigh, Jr., Boca Raton, Fla./Saint Andrews
*Hall earned the individual title at the Autumn Harvest at Architects Golf Club in Lopatcong, N.J., by shooting a 1-over par 214 (73-72-69). Her final-round 69 was used to break a three-way tie with Navy’s Emma Tang and Jamison Louie atop the leaderboard.
*She totaled five of her nine birdies in the final round to become the first Mountain Hawk to win a tournament since Reagan Jahn in September 2017.
Honorable Mentions
Joelle Johnson, Bucknell, So., Bowie, Md./Indian Creek
*Johnson finished second out of 40 golfers by shooting an 8-over par 224 (77-75-72) at the Golf Galaxy Collegiate at the par-72 Sewickley Heights Golf Course in Sewickley, Pa. She led the Bison to a first-place team finish out of seven teams.
Ronav Benak, Colgate, So., Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep
*Benak won the individual title at the CNY Classic Cup by shooting an even-par 143 (78-65) at the par-71 Bellevue Country Club in Syracuse, N.Y. The sophomore helped the Raiders finish atop the team leaderboard in a field that included Le Moyne and Binghamton.
Sophie Quinones, Holy Cross, Jr., Coral Springs, Fla./Broward Virtual
*Quinones placed 17th out of 52 golfers at the Stonehill Invitational by shooting a 9-over par 153 (78-75) at the par-72 Wiltwyck Golf Club in Kingston, N.Y.
John Scully, Holy Cross, So., Winchester, Mass./Winchester
*Scully tied for fifth place by shooting a 1-over par 145 (74-71) in the rain-shortened UConn Invitational at the par-72 GreatHorse in Hampden, Mass. His 1-under par 71 second round is his lowest round of the season and the second-lowest round of his collegiate career, helping Holy Cross finish seventh out of 14 teams.
Emma Tang, Navy, Sr., Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills
Jamison Louie, Navy, Fr., Sugar Land, Texas/Fort Bend Christian
*Tang and Louie finished as part of a three-way tie for first place with Lehigh’s Alana Hall at 1-over par 214 at the Autumn Harvest in Lopatcong, N.J. at the par-71 Architects Golf Club. Tang and Louie led the Mids to a first-place team finish out of 11 teams.
