Women's Soccer Wins First Round At Big South Challenge

Sept. 2, 2005

CONWAY, S.C. - Seniors Delaney Brown and Sarah Domme scored first-half goals and junior Ronee Farrell added a second-half tally to lead Army's women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over host Coastal Carolina in a first round match at the 2005 Big South Challenge Friday evening at the CCU Soccer Field.

The win was the second this week for the Black Knights (3-1), while the loss was the first for the Lady Chanticleers (1-1).

Army scored its quickest goal of the season when Brown connected off a free kick from 20 yards just 1:39 into the game. The goal was her third this season and career 22nd.

Domme's first tally of the season proved to be the game winner when she slid the ball into the net from five yards off double assists from Drew Biddick and Jen Pascucci. The goal was her career 10th and third game winner, while Biddick picked up her second assist and Pascucci her first helper of the season and seventh in her career.

Coastal Carolina cut Army's lead to one goal (2-1) early in the second half when Kristina Fisher converted a pass from Stepheney Gerhard in the 52nd minute, but that was as close as they would draw.

Farrell, who has had a hand in the scoring in every game thus far after being moved up front this year, added an insurance marker after stripping the ball from a defender and booting a shot into the upper right corner of the net in the 74th minute. The goal was her third of the season to retain her lead with Brown in goals, assists (2) and points (eight).

Army goalkeeper junior Rebecca Garcia made all three of her saves in the first half, while her counterpart, Jaclyn Stoll, finished with seven saves. The Black Knights have outscored their opponents 14-5.

"We were in control and had a lot of chances tonight," commented head coach Gene Ventriglia. "Our defense played exceptionally well. This team is for real and if we keep working like this, we are going to be scoring a lot of goals and winning a lot of games. Right now I feel we can win this tournament."

Army outshot Coastal Carolina 16-10 for the game, including a 10-3 first-half margin, along with holding a 3-2 corner kick advantage.

The Big South Challenge concludes Sunday, Sept. 4, with Army taking on Charleston Southern (which fell to Chattanooga, 1-0) at 12:30 p.m. and Coastal hosting Chattanooga at 3 p.m.
