Patriot League Announces Swimming & Diving Weekly Awards (10.31.2017)
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — The Boston University swimming and diving program captured two of this week’s four awards, including senior Grace Anderson and junior Cameron Schoffstall, who earned Patriot League Female Swimmer and Male Diver of the Week, respectively. Loyola Maryland’s Ben Cono earned his first male swimmer of the week, while Holy Cross’ Casey Sherman took female diver of the week honors.
Three student-athletes earned weekly honorable mention, including Lehigh’s Meghan Thompson and Croldy Veliz and Boston University’s Trevor Winans.
LAST WEEK IN PATRIOT LEAGUE SWIMMING & DIVING
Holy Cross junior diver Casey Sherman took home four first-place individual titles in last week’s meets. Sherman posted League highs on both the 1- and 3-meter board last Sunday at the Worcester City Championships with scores of 290.15 and 321.90, respectively and has qualified for the NCAA Zone Meet.
The Lehigh men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs defeated Loyola Maryland in a League double dual meet last Saturday. Mountain Hawk senior Meghan Thompson took two individual titles – the 1,000 and 500 freestyle - while sophomore Walker Wilson picked up three first-place finishes in the 1,000 and 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke. Loyola Marland’s Cono extended his 100 and 200 breaststroke win streak to 10 this season, tying Lehigh’s pool record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.50 second.
Junior Cameron Schoffstall and junior Trevor Winans were the top performers this week for Boston University, as the Terrier men picked up another win against Fordham.

MALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Ben Cono, Loyola Maryland, Sr., Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East
Cono improved his 100 and 200 breaststroke streak to 10 last week, touching the wall with times of 56.50 seconds and 2:05.27, respectively. The senior’s 100 and 200 breaststroke times were not only the fastest in the League this week, but he also tied the pool record at Lehigh in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.50.
FEMALE SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Grace Anderson, Boston U., Sr., Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills
The senior placed first in the 1,000 and 500 freestyle last week at Boston University. Anderson currently holds the fastest time in the League in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:22.05, while her 500 freestyle time of 5:01.29 is good enough for second in the League this season.
MALE DIVER OF THE WEEK
Cameron Schoffstall, Boston U., Jr., Weatogue, Conn./Simsburg High School
Schoffstall won both the 1- and 3-meter board in last week’s meet versus Fordham. The junior’s 1-and 3-meter scores were the best in the League this week winning the 1-meter with a score of 256.10 while scoring a 259.80 on the 3-meter.
FEMALE DIVER OF THE WEEK
Casey Sherman, Holy Cross, Jr., Littleton, Mass./Littleton
Sherman took four individual first place finishes last week, two in the 1-and 3-meter. The junior broke two meet records at Worcester City Championships in the 1- and 3-meter with scores of 290.15 and 321.90, respectively. Her 1- and 3-meter scores at the Worcester City Championships qualified her for the NCAA Zone Meet.
HONORABLE MENTION
Meghan Thompson, Lehigh, Sr., Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon
Thompson picked up two individual first-place finishes in the 1,000 and 500 freestyle last week in the Mountain Hawks’ win over Loyola Maryland. The senior touched the wall with times of 10:38.57 in the 1,000 freestyle and 5:12.76 in the 500 freestyle.
Croldy Veliz, Lehigh, Jr., South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield
Veliz placed first in the 1-meter and second in the 3-meter at last week’s League meet versus Loyola Maryland. The Plainfield, N.J. native won the 1-meter by an 11.7-point margin with a score of 232.94.
Trevor Winans, Boston U., Jr., Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg
The junior tabbed two first-place finishes and one second-place finish in last week’s win at the Competition Pool. Winans 200 freestyle time of 1:39.32 ranks first in the League this season, while his 100 freestyle time of 45.49 seconds is good enough for second.
