BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Boston University earned two Patriot League GEICO men’s lacrosse weekly awards while Holy Cross, Lafayette and Loyola Maryland each collected one when they were announced by the League office on Monday.
Terriers’ junior attackman Timmy Ley was named the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate junior Matt Garber earned goalie of the week.
Holy Cross freshman Connor DePiero garnered faceoff specialist of the week, Lafayette midfielder John Mathes collected rookie of the week, while Loyola Maryland junior Cam Wyers was named defensive player of the week.
Lafayette Ryan Ness, Lehigh senior midfielder Kevin Gersbeck, junior faceoff specialist Mike Sisselberger, senior goalie James Spence and junior defender Anthony Tangredi, and Loyola Maryland sophomore attack Evan James all earned honorable mention.
Offensive Player of the Week
Timmy Ley, Boston University, Jr., A, Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa
* Ley set a single-game program record with seven goals as part of his nine-point effort on Friday at Holy Cross.
* Ley factored on six (4g, 2a) of the Terriers’ goals during their 11-0 run to close out the first half as the team earned a 16-6 win.
* He has now scored a goal in 19 straight games and leads BU with 20 goals on the season.
Defensive Player of the Week
Cam Wyers, Loyola Maryland, Jr., D, Ottawa, Ontario/Everest Academy
* Wyers posted three caused turnovers to go along with four ground balls in the team’s 16-6 victory over Lafayette this weekend.
* He helped Loyola compile five clears, and he was a part of a defensive unit that allowed just three goals after the game’s first three minutes.
Faceoff Specialist of the Week
Connor DePiero, Holy Cross, Fr., FO, Medfield, Mass./Medfield
* DePiero won 14-of-15 faceoffs with seven groundballs (both season highs), against Boston University on Friday.
* On the season, the freshman has won 56.8 percent of his faceoffs (21-of-37) with 11 groundballs.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Matt Garber, Boston University, Jr., GK, Westport, Conn./Staples
* Garber made 15 saves in the Terriers’ 16-6 win over Holy Cross, including seven in the first half.
* Garber was part of a defensive unit that held Holy Cross scoreless for a stretch of 30:24.
* Garber has made at least 12 saves this season on three occasions, and owns a .615 save percentage and an 8.23 goals-against average.
Rookie of the Week
John Mathes, Lafayette, Fr., M, Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield
* Mathes scored a pair of goals in Lafayette’s games against Fairfield and Loyola Maryland this past week.
* Against Fairfield, he put five shots on goal, while he added a pair of ground balls against Loyola.
Honorable Mentions
Ryan Ness, Lafayette, Jr., GK, Chatham, N.J./Chatham
* Ness made 14 saves against Fairfield on Wednesday, followed by a career-high 19 saves in Lafayette’s loss to No. 13 Loyola on Saturday.
Kevin Gersbeck, Lehigh, Sr., M, Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place
* Gersbeck recorded career-highs in both goals (4) and points (5), to mark his first-career multi-goal game in the team’s 18-6 win over Bucknell.
Mike Sisselberger, Lehigh, Jr., FO, Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh
* Sisselberger finished the weekend 16-of-23 at the ‘X’ with a career-high 12 groundballs. The junior also scored a goal for a third-consecutive game, coming in the second quarter to put the Mountain Hawks in front of Holy Cross, 7-2.
James Spence, Lehigh, Sr., GK, Springfield, Pa./Springfield
* Spence finished with 15 saves in the Mountain Hawks’ 18-6 win over Bucknell on Sunday.
* The senior stopped all four shots sent his way in the first quarter to help Lehigh take a 4-0 lead into the second, stopped four-of-six sent his way in the second quarter and six-of-eight in the third quarter.
Anthony Tangredi, Lehigh, Jr., D, Smithtown, N.Y./Chaminade
* Tangredi played key role in Lehigh’s defense, which held Holy Cross to six goals. He finished with two groundballs and three caused turnovers while holding Bucknell’s Alston Tary to just a single goal.
Evan James, Loyola Maryland, So., Attack, Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman
* James matched his career-high with six points Saturday in a 16-6 win over Lafayette, scoring four goals and dishing out a pair of assists.
