BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Army West Point, Boston University, Lafayette, Lehigh, and Navy all earned one Patriot League GEICO men’s lacrosse weekly award when they were announced by the League office on Monday.
Lehigh junior attack Tommy Schelling was named the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while Boston University graduate student Nicholas Ellerton collected defensive player of the week.
Army West Point sophomore Stevie Grabher earned faceoff specialist of the week, while Navy senior Spencer Rees garnered goalkeeper of the week, and Lafayette attack Charlie Conniffe earned rookie of the week.
Army junior defender Marcus Hudgins, junior attack Brendan Nichtern and junior goalie Wyatt Schupler, Boston University junior goalkeeper Matt Garber, Lehigh junior faceoff specialist Mike Sisselberger, Loyola Maryland senior faceoff specialist Bailey Savio, and Navy sophomore midfielder Patrick Skalniak all earned honorable mention.
Offensive Player of the Week
Tommy Schelling, Lehigh, Jr., A, Warren, N.J./Delbarton
* Schelling posted a season-high five goals, along with an assist in Sunday's 15-10 win at Colgate.
* The junior had three points in each half (two goals, one assist in the first and three goals in the second).
* For the season, Schelling leads the Mountain Hawks in goals (10), assists (13) and points (23).
Defensive Player of the Week
Nicholas Ellerton, Boston University, GS, D, Toronto, Ont./Phillips Andover
* Ellerton had two caused turnovers and three ground balls, to go with one goal against Lafayette.
* Ellerton defended Lafayette’s leading goal scorer, Peter Lehman, for most of the game, as Lehman’s two goals came when Ellerton had a different assignment.
Faceoff Specialist of the Week
Stevie Grabher, Army West Point, So., FO, Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore
* Grabher was dominant at the faceoff ‘X’ with 14 wins on 18 chances, with seven ground balls.
* He also added a goal in the first minute of the game, scoring right off a faceoff for his first goal of the season.
* The sophomore has reached double-digit faceoff wins in three of the five games this season.
Goalkeeper of the Week
Spencer Rees, Navy, Sr., GK, Baltimore, Md./Boys' Latin
* Rees collected a career-high 17 saves, marking the best save output by a Navy goalie since Ryan Kern made 18 stops against Boston University on April 26, 2019.
* The senior was part of a Navy defense that held Bucknell scoreless for better than 10 minutes as the Mids went on a 5-0 run and broke a 6-6 tie in the third quarter.
* He also kept the Bison off the scoreboard for just over 17 minutes between the first and second quarters to build a 2-1 lead going into the second frame.
Rookie of the Week
Charlie Conniffe, Lafayette, Fr., A, Newtown Square, Pa./Episcopal Academic
* Cunniffe earned five points in two games, including two goals and two assists in the Leopards’ loss to Boston University on Saturday.
* Cunniffe added an assist midweek against Drexel and chipped in three caused turnovers and three ground balls during the two contests.
* The freshman leads the team with 14 points.
Honorable Mentions
Marcus Hudgins, Army West Point, Jr., D, Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill (USMAPS)
* Hudgins led the Army defense in allowing a season-low three goals, to go with three caused turnovers and picked up four ground balls in the win against Holy Cross.
Brendan Nichtern, Army West Point, Jr., A, Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa (USMAPS)
* Nichtern led the Army attack against Holy Cross with six points on a goal and five assists, and four of his five assists went to different goal scorers.
Wyatt Schupler, Army West Point, Jr., GK, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra
* Schupler made nine saves against Holy Cross in the 13-3 win on Saturday, allowing a season-low two goals and helped Army keep the Crusaders scoreless for 42 minutes of action.
Matt Garber, Boston University, Jr., GK, Westport, Conn./Staples
* Garber made 16 saves and collected a career-best five ground balls in the Terriers’ 13-9 win. He made 11 of his saves in the second half, including six in the fourth quarter.
Mike Sisselberger, Lehigh, Jr., FO/M, Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh
* Sisselberger posted career highs in faceoffs won (19), faceoff attempts (25) and groundballs (15), as he won 8-of-10 faceoffs in the third quarter, which was the beginning of Lehigh's 10-2 run to turn a tie score into an eight-goal lead.
Bailey Savio, Loyola Maryland, Sr., FO, Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich
* Savio won 75 percent of his faceoffs against Towson on Saturday, as he went 12 of 16 from the ‘X’, picking up six ground balls in the process.
Patrick Skalniak, Navy, So., M, Dallas, Texas/The Episcopal School of Dallas
* Skalniak paced Navy with a career-high six points on two goals (tied career high) and four assists (career high) in the Mids' win over Bucknell.
