Patriot League Announces GEICO Men’s Lacrosse Players of the Week (4.19.21)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Army West Point earned two of the five Patriot League GEICO men’s lacrosse weekly awards when they were announced by the League office on Monday. Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy also received weekly laurels.

Navy senior Christian Daniel was named the Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while Lehigh junior Mike Sisselberger collected faceoff specialist of the week for the third-straight week.

Army junior short-stick defensive midfielder Doug Jones garnered defensive player of the week while teammate junior Wyatt Schupler received goalkeeper of the week honors for the second-straight week.

Lafayette attack Peter Lehman rounded out the weekly awards as the rookie of the week.

Army sophomore faceoff specialist Stevie Grabher and junior attack Brendan Nichtern, Boston University freshman attack Tommy Bourque, Boston University freshman attack Tommy Bourque, Lehigh sophomore attack Christian Mule’ and senior goalkeeper James Spence, and Navy senior long-stick midfielder Jeff Durden, senior goalkeeper Spencer Rees and freshman faceoff-specialist Jacob Jarosz all earned honorable mentions.

Offensive Player of the Week
Christian Daniel, Navy, Sr., A, Owings, Md./Northern
* Daniel paced Navy with six points on a goal and a career-high five assists in the 14-12 win over Loyola Maryland.
• His goal came with 1:28 remaining in the game as he split the double team and bounced his shot past a third defender into the open goal to give the Mids an insurance goal.
* Three of his assists came in the opening quarter as Navy built a 7-1 lead, his fourth assist gave the Mids an 8-2 lead and his fifth put the Mids ahead 11-5.

Defensive Player of the Week
Doug Jones, Army West Point, Jr., SSDM, West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove (USMAPS)
* Jones scored his second goal of the season in Army's 14-8 win over Boston University, to go along with six ground balls and one caused turnover. 
* The junior was also part of the defense that held Boston to four goals through three periods and just one in the first half. 

Faceoff Specialist of the Week 
Mike Sisselberger, Lehigh, Jr., FO/M, Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh
* Sisselberger, the nation's leader in faceoff percentage, went 44-of-52  at the ‘X’ (84.6 percent) with 41 ground balls in the team’s 2-0 week against Lafayette.
* On Friday, won 21-of-25 faceoffs and collected a program and Patriot League record 20 ground balls (breaking Bailey Savio's record of 18 from 2018). Then on Sunday, Sisselberger broke his own program and League record, collecting 21 ground balls.
* For the season, Sisselberger has won 79.6 percent of his faceoffs (152-of-191) with 113 ground balls.

Goalkeeper of the Week 
Wyatt Schupler, Army West Point, Jr., GK, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra

* Schupler finished with 10 saves in Army's 14-8 win over Boston University.
* He added one ground ball and a caused turnover in the victory.
* The junior has reached double-digit saves in seven of eight games this season and had four stops in the fourth quarter. 

Rookie of the Week 
Peter Lehman, Lafayette, Fr., A, Warminster, Pa./Council Rock North
* Lehman scored six goals across two games against Lehigh this past week.
* His four goals and five points in the second game were season-highs, to go along with three ground balls and a caused turnover.

Honorable Mentions
Stevie Grabher, Army West Point, So., FO, Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore
* Grabher went 15-of-22 at the faceoff against Boston University in Army's 14-8 win on Saturday. He also scored his second goal of the season just six seconds after BU took the early lead in the first minute of the game. 

Brendan Nichtern, Army West Point, Jr., A, Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa (USMAPS)
* Nichtern finished with five points with a goal and four assists in Army's 14-8 win over Boston University. 

Tommy Bourque, Boston University, Fr., A, Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood
* Bourque matched his career-high with two goals to lead the Terriers’ offense on Saturday at No. 11/10 Army West Point.
* He gave BU the lead just 46 seconds into the contest and then tried to spark a second-half rally with his second goal of the day early in the third quarter.

Christian Mule’, Lehigh, So., A, Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West
*
Mule’ finished the 2-0 week with seven goals and three assists, including four goals and two assists in Friday's 18-11 win at Lafayette.

James Spence, Lehigh, Sr., GK, Springfield, Pa./Springfield
* Spence stopped 12-of-22 shots sent his way on Friday then 10-of-21 on Sunday in wins over Lafayette. For the season, Spence owns an 8.48 GAA and 59.1 save percentage.

Jeff Durden, Navy, Sr., LSM, Cumming, Ga./The McCallie School (Tenn.)
* Durden scored a career-high two goals, including the game-winner in the team’s 14-12 win over Loyola Maryland.
* He was also part of a defensive effort that held Loyola scoreless for the first 11+ minutes of the game as Navy took a 6-0 lead.

Spencer Rees, Navy, Sr., GK, Baltimore, Md./Boys’ Latin
* Rees made 15 saves in the contest, including turning aside Peter Swindell's 10-yard shot with 3:28 that would have tied the game.

Jacob Jarosz, Navy, Jr., FO, Gambrills, Md./Severn School
* Jorosz won 10 of the 13 draws (76.9) in the second half, including each of the final three in the win over Loyola Maryland (14-12).
