Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week Announced (2.07.23)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Army West Point, Boston University and Navy each claimed two Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Weekly Awards when the League announced honors on Tuesday.
 
Navy’s Molly Mangan was named Patriot League Indoor Women’s Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this season after winning and posting ECAC-qualifying times in three events at the Army-Navy Star Meet. Army West Point’s Luke Griner won the men’s track athlete of the week for the second time this season after finishing first at the Army-Navy Star Meet in the 800 meters with an IC4A-qualifying and nationally-ranked time of 1:50.06.
 
Army West Point Junior Kayley Ragazzini collected Patriot League Women’s Field Athlete of the Week after posting two ECAC-qualifying throws in the shot put and weight throw at the Army-Navy Star Meet. Navy’s Joshua Boamah was named men’s field athlete of the week after recording two nationally-ranked throws in the shot put and weight throw.
 
Boston University freshman Vera Sjöberg was named Patriot League Women’s Rookie of the Week after posting a Patriot League-best time of 2:47.80 in the 1000 meters. Terriers’ classmate Logan Popelka was named men’s rookie of the week after finishing third at the Scarlet & White Invite in the 200 meters with an IC4A-qualifying time of 21.21, ranking second in the League this season.
 
Bucknell’s Bridget Lalonde and Sam Whittaker, Holy Cross’s Obiamaka Igwenagu, Lehigh’s Laura Reigle, and Navy’s Molly Chapman, Jacques Guillaume, and Jia Anderson all received honorable mentions for their performances last week.
 
Patriot League Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Luke Griner, Army West Point, Jr., Middle Distance, Syracuse, Ind. / Wawasee
*Griner placed first in the 800 meters at the Army-Navy Star Meet with an IC4A-qualifying time of 1:50.06. His time ranks 26th in NCAA DI.
*His 800 meters time is the fastest in the Patriot League this year.

Patriot League Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Molly Mangan, Navy, Sr. Sprints, Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon
*Mangan claimed 15 points for Navy with her three wins in the 60, 200 and 400 meters at the Army-Navy Star Meet all with ECAC qualification.
*Her time in the 60 meters (7.59) and 200 meters (24.36) are both ranked second in the League this season.

Patriot League Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Joshua Boamah, Navy, Jr., Throws, San Diego, Ca./ Scripps Ranch
*Boamah took home first place finishes in the shot put and weight throw at the Army-Navy Star Meet with IC4A-qualifying throws of 18.33m and 20.11m, respectively.
*His shot put distance is first in the Patriot League and 43rd in NCAA DI, while his weight throw is second in the League and  47th in the nation.
 
Patriot League Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Kayley Ragazzini, Army West Point, Jr., Throws, Hewlett, N.Y./G.W. Hewlett
*Ragazzini earned a first and second place finish with ECAC-qualifying throws in the shot put and weight throw the at the Army-Navy Star Meet.
*Her throws of 17.96m in the weight throw and 14.55m in the shot put rank second and third, respectively, in the Patriot League this season.

Patriot League Men’s Rookie of the Week
Logan Popelka, Boston University, Fr., Sprints, Wylie, Tx. / Wylie High School
*Popelka finished third at the Scarlet & White Invite in the 200 meters with an IC4A-qualifying time of 21.21 along with helping BU finish fourth in the DMR that also qualified for an IC4A time.
*BU’s DMR is the fastest in the Patriot League this season. His 200 meters time is second in the League.

Patriot League Women’s Rookie of the Week
Vera Sjöberg, Boston University, Fr., Distance, Stockholm, Sweden/Rudbeck High School
*Sjöberg finished the 1000 meters with a Patriot League-best time of 2:47.80 at the Scarlet and White Invite, while also helping BU finish post a League-best distance medley relay (DMR) time (11:19.21).
*Both the 1000 meters and DMR times qualified for ECAC championships and landed in the top three of the Boston University program record books. 

Honorable Mentions
Sam Whittaker, Bucknell, Sr., Distance, Salem, Conn./ East Lyme
*Whittaker took home second-place in the 3000 meters at the Scarlet & White Invite with a IC4A-qualifying time of 8:02.55. He has the best time in the League and broke a 38-year record for the Bucknell program.
 
Jacques Guillaume, Navy, So., Middle Distance, Jacksonville, Fla./ Mandarin
*Guillaume finished first in both the 200 and 400 meters, respectively, at the Army-Navy Star Meet with both being IC4A-qualifying times. His 200 meters time ranks second in the Patriot League this season. 
 
Bridget Lalonde, Bucknell, Sr., Sprints, Hebron, Conn./Rham
*Lalonde earned ECAC-qualifying times in the 400 meters and 4x400 that rank third and first fastest respectively in the Patriot League, with her 400 meters time ranking second best all time in Bucknell Program history.
 
Obiamaka Igwenagu, Holy Cross, Sr., Sprints/Jumps, Auburn, Mass./Auburn
*Igwenagu earned first in the triple jump at the New England Indoor Championship with an ECAC-qualifying jump of 12.38m that ranks second in the Patriot League this season.
 
Laura Reigle, Lehigh, Fy., Pole Vault, Hilton, N.Y./Hilton Central
*Reigle placed fourth at the Scarlet Knight Open with another ECAC-qualifying vault of 3.98m. Her vault is second in the League this year.
 
Molly Chapman, Navy, Sr., Sprints, Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County
*Chapman claimed 13 points for Navy at the Army-Navy Star Meet with wins and ECAC qualifying jumps in the long jump (5.77m) and the triple jump (12.12m) with her triple jump ranking third in the League this season.
 
Jia Anderson, Navy, Fr., Sprints, Wilmington, Del./ Padua Academy

*Anderson earned first at the Army-Navy Star Meet in the 60m hurdles with an ECAC-qualifying time of 8.49 that is the fastest in the Patriot League this year and set a new school record.
