Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Notebook (2.8.24)

Eight League teams open the 2024 campaign this weekend, including seven games on ESPN+.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Eight Patriot League women’s lacrosse are in action during the opening weekend of the 2024 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse season, beginning with three teams opening their home schedules on ESPN+ on Friday. Lehigh hosts Delaware (3 p.m.), No. 25 Navy welcomes No. 24 Duke (4 p.m.) and No. 15 Army West Point takes on No. 17 USC (5 p.m.) with live coverage of each game on ESPN+.
 
Five more teams open their seasons on Saturday, with American hosting crosstown rival Georgetown (11 a.m.) and Colgate traveling to Temple (11 a.m.) both on ESPN+. Three-time defending Patriot League Champion No. 8 Loyola Maryland hosts No. 10 Florida at noon. Colgate opens their season at Temple at 1 p.m., while Holy Cross welcomes Fairfield at 1 p.m. on ESPN+. Boston University travels to Merrimack for a 4 p.m. matchup on ESPN+.

THREE LEAGUE TEAMS RANKED IN THE 2024 ILWOMEN/IWLCA PRESEASON POLL
Three Patriot League women’s lacrosse teams were ranked in the ILWomen/IWLCA Division I Preseason Poll when it was announced last month. Three-time defending Patriot League Champion Loyola Maryland was ranked No. 8 after finishing the 2023 season at No. 7. The Greyhounds were selected to finish atop the 2024 Patriot League Preseason Poll. Army West Point opens the season in the polls for the first time in program history at No. 15 after advancing to their first NCAA Tournament in 2023. The Black Knights finished second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll. Navy checked in at No. 25 in the ILWomen/IWLCA Division I Preseason Poll after advancing to the Patriot League semifinals last season. The Mids were ranked third in the League’s preseason poll in January.

The Greyhounds were ranked No. 9 in the USA Lacrosse Division I Women’s Top 20 Poll, while the Black Knights enter the season at No. 13. Navy is one of four teams receiving votes.

FIVE PATRIOT LEAGUE PLAYERS EARN PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA HONORS
USA Lacrosse Magazine introduced its NCAA Division I Women’s Preseason All-America honors in January, with five Patriot League women’s lacrosse student-athletes recognized. Army West Point Brigid Duffy (56 g, 26 a, 82 p) was the lone League student-athlete to earn first-team honors. The 2024 Patriot League Preseason Midfielder of the Year, was the League’s 2023 Rookie of the Year. Loyola Maryland junior goalkeeper Lauren Spence received second-team honors. The defending Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year posted a 7.18 goals-against average and .520 save percentage last season.
 
The Greyhounds had two players make the third team with senior attack Sydni Black (55 g, 26 a, 81 p) and junior Georgia Latch (45 g, 44 a, 89 p), the 2023 Patriot League Attacker of the Year. Navy sophomore midfielder Ava Yovino (42 g, 50 a, 92 p) was an Honorable Mention All-America selection after leading the Patriot League in assists and points during her freshman campaign.

ILWOMEN RECOGNIZES FIVE PATRIOT LEAGUE STUDENT-ATHLETES AS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS
Five Patriot League women’s lacrosse student-athletes were recognized when ILWomen announced its 2024 Women’s Division I All-Americans. Army West Point’s Duffy and Loyola Maryland’s Spence garnered second-team accolades. Loyola’s Latch received third-team honors, while Loyola’s Black and Navy’s Yovino both collected honorable mention All-America status.

LOYOLA MARYLAND RANKED ATOP PATRIOT LEAGUE PRESEASON POLL
Head coach Jen Adams and the four-time defending Patriot League Champion Greyhounds received 162 points and 18 first-place votes. Army West Point, coming off the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance, ranked second with 140 points and two first-place votes. Navy (132) and Lehigh (118) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the preseason poll after advancing to the League semifinals in 2023. Boston University (92) and Holy Cross (74) ranked fifth and sixth, with Colgate (59), American (53), Bucknell (51) and Lafayette (19) rounding out the preseason poll.

LEHIGH’S SCHNEIDER BREAKS PROGRAM ASSISTS RECORD
Lehigh graduate student attack Gabby Schneider enters the season seventh in Patriot League history with 117 career assists. The Smithtown, N.Y. native is third among the NCAA DI active leaders in the category. Last season, she passed Mountain Hawk great Allison LaBeau (105 career assists) to become Lehigh’s career assists leader. She also became the 33rd player in Patriot League history to eclipse 200 career points. Her 236 points rank 26th among the Patriot League’s career leaders. Lehigh graduate student teammate Emma Eberhardt is 34th in League history with 201 points.
 
GREYHOUNDS’ SYDNI BLACK LEADING LEAGUE’S ACTIVE GOAL SCORERS
Loyola Maryland attack Sydni Black, the 2023 Patriot League Championship Most Valuable Player, enters her senior season with 102 career goals, 76th in League history and first among active players. The Cincinnati, Ohio native scored a career-high 55 goals last season, fourth among League players.
 
ILWOMEN TOP 2024 UNIT RANKINGS
The Greyhounds’ attack and defensive units were listed among the “Five to Watch” when ILWomen unveiled its Top 2024 Unit Rankings in January. The Greyhounds’ attack unit returns preseason All-America selections Georgia Latch (Jr., A) and Sydni Black (Sr., A). Loyola Maryland’s defensive unit was recognized due to the return of Preseason All-America goalkeeper Lauren Spence.

Four Patriot League women’s lacrosse student-athletes were recognized by ILWomen when the publication ranked its top 50 players in NCAA DI before the New Year.

PATRIOT LEAGUE WOMEN’S LACROSSE ON CBS SPORTS NETWORK
The 2024 Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Championship Game will be aired on Saturday, May 4, with live coverage beginning at 2:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. The regular-season meeting between Patriot League runner-up Army West Point and semifinalist Navy is scheduled for Saturday, April 13 (4:15 p.m.).
