Patriot League Announces Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week (4.7.26)

Lehigh’s Van Lumich, Navy’s Gu earn Patriot League Tennis Weekly Awards

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Lehigh junior Alex Van Lumich and Navy sophomore Emma Gu earned Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honors, respectively, when the League office announced its awards on Tuesday.

Van Lumich captured Patriot League Men’s Tennis Player of the Week recognition after going 2–0 in Lehigh’s win over Loyola, earning victories at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles.

Gu was named Patriot League Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after earning a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles over Army West Point’s Madison Smith to help Navy secure a 4–2 win in the Star Match.

Lehigh junior Maggie Forkner, Colgate junior Sophia Montero, Bucknell sophomore Natalie Devraj and senior Amar Tahirovic, Army West Point junior Stacey Samonte, Holy Cross junior Matt Carlson and Boston University freshman David Asenov earned honorable mention recognition.

Van Lumich went 2–0 in Lehigh’s win over Loyola Maryland, earning victories at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles.
*He secured a 7-5, 6-0 straight-set win at the top singles spot and added a 6-1 doubles victory alongside Aleksandar Daskalovic.
*Van Lumich helped lead Lehigh to its first-ever 3–0 start in Patriot League play.

Patriot League Women’s Player of the Week
Emma Gu, Navy, So., West Lafayette, Ind./Harrison

Gu earned a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles over Army West Point’s Madison Smith to help Navy secure a 4–2 win in the Star Match.
*Her win was the first of four singles victories for the Mids after dropping the doubles point.
*Gu is 7–3 in her last 10 singles matches and 3–1 in League play this season.

Maggie Forkner, Lehigh, Jr., Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville

Forkner rallied from a set down to defeat Loyola Maryland’s Christine Richiez, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, clinching a pivotal point at No. 1 singles in Lehigh’s 4–3 victory.

Sophia Montero, Colgate, Jr., Westfield, N.J./Westfield
Montero earned a comeback three-set win at No. 2 singles and added a No. 1 doubles victory alongside Amelia Galin in a narrow 4–3 loss to Bucknell.

Natalie Devraj, Bucknell, So., Mandeville, La./Mandeville
Devraj won both singles and doubles matches to help Bucknell secure a 4–3 victory over Colgate, earning the doubles point and a straight-set win at No. 6 singles.

Stacey Samonte, Army West Point, Jr., Whittier, Calif./California
Samonte earned a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles in Army West Point’s match against Navy.

Amar Tahirovic, Bucknell, Sr., Stuttgart, Germany/Stuttgart
Tahirovic won at No. 1 singles and doubles, earning a straight-set singles victory to help Bucknell to a 5–2 win over Colgate on Senior Day.

Matt Carlson, Holy Cross, Jr., Amherst, N.Y./Nichols
Carlson earned a comeback three-set win at No. 2 singles and contributed to a doubles point victory against Boston University.

David Asenov, Boston University, Fr., Toronto, Ont./Northview Heights
Asenov earned a first-set tiebreak win at No. 1 singles before play was halted, helping BU secure a 4–2 victory over Holy Cross.
