BETHLEHEM, Pa. – American and Lafayette each collected two of the five Patriot League field hockey weekly awards when the League office announced honors on Monday. Holy Cross received the remaining accolade.
The Patriot League field hockey players of the week are selected in a vote by League head coaches, who are not eligible to vote for their own student-athletes.
Patriot League Field Hockey Forward of the Week
Jill DuVarney, American, So., Striker, Ayer, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional
*DuVarney scored the game-winning goal in American’s 1-0 victory over Bucknell on Friday.
*She scored with 34 seconds remaining in regulation to break a scoreless tie, handing the Eagles a League season-opening victory.
*The sophomore striker had a team-leading three shots against the Bison.
Patriot League Field Hockey Midfielder of the Week
Katie Gibb, Lafayette, Sr., Midfielder, Vancouver, B.C./Point Grey Secondary
*Gibb scored two goals and added one assist in Lafayette’s wins against Colgate (2-0) and VCU (2-0) to extend the Leopards’ win streak to six games.
*Against Colgate, Gibb scored one goal and dished out an assist to help Lafayette start 1-0 in League play.
*She scored the first goal of the Leopards’ 2-0 win over VCU on Sunday.
Patriot League Field Hockey Defender of the Week
Sophie Willemse, American, Sr., Defender, Oisterwijk, The Netherlands/2College Durendael
*Willemse led the Eagles’ defense in recording a pair of shutout wins, allowing just one shot on goal, in victories over Bucknell (1-0) and Lock Haven (6-0).
*She helped the Eagles hold Bucknell without a shot on goal to earn a 1-0 victory in their League opener.
*The senior defender recorded an assist in American’s 6-0 win over Lock Haven.
Patriot League Field Hockey Goalkeeper of the Week
Addison Kahn, Lafayette, Jr., Goalkeeper, Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford
*Kahn posted shutouts in Lafayette’s wins over Colgate (2-0) and VCU (2-0) to help extend the Leopards’ win streak to six games.
*She made two saves against the Raiders in the League season opener.
*The junior goalkeeper made one save for her second shutout of the weekend against the Rams.
Patriot League Field Hockey Rookie of the Week
Marianna Maclean, Holy Cross, Fr., Midfielder, Edinburgh, Scotland/Fettes College
*Maclean picked up her third Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor of the season after scoring a goal in the Crusaders’ 4-0 win over Lehigh in the League season opener.
*She scored Holy Cross’ fourth goal of the game with less than three minutes remaining in the match.
*The freshman midfielder leads the League in points (17), is tied for the League lead in goals (6) and is tied for second in assists (5).
Honorable Mentions
Emilia Winkler, American, Sr., Midfielder, Berlin, Germany/Kant-Oberschule
*Winkler scored her first goal of the season in American’s 6-0 win over Lock Haven on Sunday. She played a critical role in helping an Eagles’ squad hold Bucknell and Lock Haven scoreless to help AU go 2-0 last week.
Lucy Johnson, Boston University, So., Forward, Portland, Maine/Cheverus
*Johnson scored one goal and added one assist to help Boston University to a 5-1 victory over New Hampshire on Sunday. She scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the fourth quarter to give BU a 3-0 lead. The sophomore forward assisted Molly Driscoll’s second-quarter goal to put the Terriers in front 2-0.
Annie Lake, Colgate, Sr., Defender, Wilmette, Ill./New Trier
*Lake played 120 minutes across two games to help the Raiders’ defense hold Lafayette to two goals and Rutgers to three.
Mia McCloskey, Holy Cross, Jr., Goalkeeper, Villanova, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame de Namur
*McCloskey recorded a shutout in Holy Cross’ 4-0 victory over Lehigh in the League season opener. She ranks third in the Patriot League with a 1.89 goals-against average (GAA).
Maguire Sturgis, Holy Cross, Sr., Midfielder, Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet
*Sturgis scored Holy Cross’ second goal of the game in the Crusaders’ 4-0 win over Lehigh on Saturday to improve to 1-0 in League play. She helped Holy Cross hold the Mountain Hawks without a shot.
Stella Malinowski, Lafayette, Sr., Forward, Vancouver, B.C./Little Flower Academy
*Malinowski had a hand in both of the Leopards’ goals, scoring on a penalty stroke and recording an assist in a 2-0 win over VCU on Sunday to help the Leopards extend their win streak to six games.
Rosalie van Gool, Lafayette, So., Defender, Sint-Michielsgestel, The Netherlands/Maurik College
*The sophomore defender scored one goal and added an assist in the Leopards’ 2-0 victory over Colgate on Friday. She was part of a Lafayette defense that held the Raiders and VCU scoreless, limiting the teams to a combined three shots on goal.
