WEST POINT, N.Y. -
In its second match of the day Army defeated Albany 7-0 Sunday afternoon at Lichtenberg Tennis Center. The Black Knights start their spring season 2-0.
Highlighting the day for Army was Annie Collier's 6-2, 6-2 victory over Violeta Petijevic at No. 1 singles. Collier moved into a tie for first with Jennifer Blatty, who played at Army from 1996-2000, with 27 career victories at No. 1 singles. Collier already holds the career record for doubles victories with 70, after an 8-1 showing with partner Megan Noble at No. 1 doubles this afternoon.
The Black Knights breezed through the rest of the doubles competition just as easily. Marissa Limsiaco and Melanie Bundoc teamed up for an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles while Lauren Leftin and Amanda Paluch won an easy 8-2 decision at No. 3.
In singles play, Army blanked its second straight opponent, winning all six matches. After winning No. 1 singles earlier in the day, Limsiaco turned in a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. Noble and Paluch each notched her second singles win of the day with victories at No. 3 and 4, respectively.
Bundoc and Pam Chavez competed at No. 5 and 6 singles and each was victorious. Bundoc downed Krista Babiarz, 7-5, 6-2 and Chavez triumphed by a 6-1, 6-0 margin over Reeba Miller.
"The girls played really well today. It was a good way to open the spring season," commented Army head coach Paul Peck. "Albany's first three singles players were tough."
Next weekend the Black Knights resume individual competition with a trip to Ithaca, N.Y., Feb. 1-2, for the Cornell Invitational. Play begins each day at 9 a.m.
