WEST POINT, N.Y. – The 2024 Patriot League Men's Tennis Championship Match is set as No. 1 Boston University and No. 2 Navy will play for the League title on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Army West Point’s Malek Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y.
In game one of Saturday’s semifinal round, No. 1 BU swept No. 4 Army 4-0. The Terriers earned the doubles point with wins on court one and court two. On court one, BU’s Corey Craig and Alejandro Licea defeated Army’s Jake Huarte and Vishnu Bodavula 7(7)-6(5). In the No. 2 position, Johann Sajonz and Jakob Esterowitz earned a 7(7)-6(5) victory over the Black Knights’ Marcus Sebastian and Alan Ton.
In singles play, Gustavs Dambins put BU up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win on court four. Jakob Esterowitz’s 6-0, 6-1 victory on court two gave the Terriers a 3-0 lead. On court one, Craig captured the win for BU with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Army’s Jake Huarte.
In the second match of the day, No. 2 Navy defeated No. 3 Bucknell 4-2. Navy took a 1-0 lead after earning the doubles point with wins from Sasha Panyan/Luke Garner (6-3) and Herrick Legaspi/Nathan Nguyen (6-3) on courts one and three, respectively.
In singles action, Garner made it 2-0 Mids with a 6-2, 6-2 court-three victory. On court six, Aniketh Ayinala’s 6-2, 6-3 win gave Navy a 3-0 lead. Adam Stavrakas got the Bison on the board with a 6-0, 6-4 win on court two. In the No. 1 position, Bucknell’s Tahirovic’s 6-1, 7(7)-6(5) win over Panyan cut Navy’s lead to 3-2. On court four, after dropping the first set, the Mids’ Nguyen fought back to earn a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Liam Kilmer that sealed Navy’s trip to the finals.
BU is on a nine-match winning streak. Navy has advanced to the title match every year since 2012 and looks to score its sixth-straight League title. The two teams met in the regular season on March 24th when the Terriers topped the Mids 4-2.
BU is led by 2023 Patriot League Rookie of the Year sophomore Corey Craig, who has not lost a court-one League singles match this season (8-0). Navy features reigning Patriot League Player of the Year, Sasha Panyan. The Mids senior also earned last year’s Joe Abrahamson Memorial Award as the League Championship MVP.
The winner of Sunday’s match will receive the League’s automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship.
