2024 Patriot League Men’s Tennis Championship Preview (4.24.24)

 BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The 2024 Patriot League Men's Tennis Championship will be held at Army West Point’s Malek Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. beginning Thursday, April, 25 and concluding on Sunday, April, 28. In case of inclement weather, the championship will be moved indoors to the Lichtenberg Tennis Center at the U.S. Military Academy.
 
Boston University enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed for the first time in program history after going undefeated (6-0) in Patriot League play.  Defending champion No. 2 Navy looks to capture their sixth-straight League title.
 
Matchups
Friday’s quarterfinals will begin at 8:30 a.m. with No. 1 Boston University playing the winner of Thursday’s No. 8 Holy Cross/No. 9 Lafayette match. No. 4 Army versus No. 5 Lehigh will follow at 10:15 a.m. and No. 3 Bucknell versus No. 6 Colgate at 12:45 p.m. The No. 2 Navy/No. 7 Loyola match will round out the day at 3:15 p.m.
 
Semifinal matches will be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 with the Championship scheduled for Sunday, April 28 at 11 a.m.

The Joe Abrahamson Memorial Award 
The Joe Abrahamson Memorial Award as the Patriot League Championship MVP is selected by the winning team’s head coach on Sunday, following the championship match. The reigning MVP is Navy senior Sasha Panyan whose 6-2, 6-3 court-one win over BU’s Dion Loutas led the Mids to their fifth-straight League title. He was also named the 2023 Patriot League Men’s Player of the Year and Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year. With the two honors, he became only the fourth men’s or women’s tennis student-athlete to claim all four individual honors awarded by the League, including rookie of the year (2021), tournament MVP (2023), player of the year (2023) and scholar-athlete of the year (2023). He is the third Navy men’s tennis player to accomplish the feat.
 
 2024 Patriot League Men’s Tennis Postseason Awards
The All-League team will consist of 12 players with six on the first team and six on the second team, voted by the men’s tennis coaches. The first team will consist of a half dozen student-athletes, regardless of singles or double status. The second team will consist of the next six overall players, regardless of singles or doubles status. Head coaches will also vote on the Player of the Year, Doubles Team of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year.
 
Returning All-League Players
Last year’s rookie of the year and Patriot League first-team honoree, BU sophomore Corey Craig, heads into the tournament with a 6-0 No. 1 singles record in League play. Craig also earned an unprecedented six 2024 Patriot League Player of the Week honors, including a stretch of four weeks in a row. Other all-League returners include Navy junior Luke Garner and senior Panyan, BU sophomore Alejandro Licea and junior Dion Loutas, Bucknell sophomore Amar Tahirovic, and Lehigh junior Marc Blekhman and senior Matt Kleiman.

2023 Patriot League Women’s Tennis Championship Recap
The top-seeded Navy Midshipmen men’s tennis team claimed the 2023 Patriot League Men’s Tennis Championship with a 4-0 victory over No. 3 Boston University in Syracuse, N.Y. The win marked the Mids’ fifth-straight Patriot League Men’s Tennis Championship title. Navy took the doubles point with wins on courts two (6-2) and three (6-3) from Nathan Nguyen/Finn Garner and Gavin Segraves/Christian Pumpelly, respectively. In singles play, Navy’s Panyan increased the lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Terrier’s Dion Loutas on court one. Herrick Legaspi made it 3-0 with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory versus BU’s Cole Knutson on court four. Aniketh Ayinala sealed the win for the Mids with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 court-six victory against BU’s Jonah Dickson.
