No. 8 Holy Cross Advances to Patriot League Men’s Tennis Quarterfinals (4.25.24)

WEST POINT, N.Y.  No. 8 Holy Cross earned a 4-1 win over No. 9 Lafayette in the first round of the 2024 Patriot League Men’s Tennis Championship on Thursday at Army West Point’s Malek Tennis Center in West Point, N.Y. 
 
The Leopards captured the first point of the match with two victories in doubles action. On court one, Lafayette’s Arman Ganchi and Nick McKenzie claimed a 6-0 win over Holy Cross’ Jeremy Clark and Henry Winiecki. On court three, the Leopards’ Sam Gelber and Derrin Lerner battled to a back-and-forth 6(7)-7(9) victory over the Crusaders’ Camilo Illanes and Connor Nelson.

In singles play, Holy Cross’ Teddy Callery evened the score at 1-1 with a No. 4 victory over the Leopards’ Lerner (6-2, 6-3). Holy Cross increased its lead to 2-1 when Illanes bested William Woolley 6-2, 6-2 on court five. William Kelleher put the Crusader up 3-1 with a No. 1 win over Ganchi (6-3, 6-4).

Declan O’Flynn sealed the win for Holy Cross with a 6-3, 6-4 court-three win over Jake Magnusson.

The Crusaders will face top-seeded Boston University in the quarterfinals on Friday at 8:30 a.m.
