No. 2 Bucknell Advances to Meet No. 1 Army West Point for Patriot League Baseball Title (5.15.22)

Bison sweep Mountain Hawks to make championship series for the first time since 2017

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 2 Bucknell (21-23, 14-11 PL) completed a two-game sweep over No 3 Lehigh (26-24, 12-13 PL) with a 7-4 victory on Sunday to set up a matchup with No. 1 Army West Point (29-21, 18-7 PL) in the 2022 Patriot League Baseball Championship Series.   
 
The second-seeded Bison took advantage of a five-run sixth inning, highlighted by a grand slam from senior second baseman Brendan Lowery, to advance to the Patriot League Baseball Championship Series for the first time since 2017. Bucknell will meet the three-time defending champion Black Knights, who swept No. 4 Holy Cross on Saturday.
 
The best two-of-three game championship series will begin on Tuesday, May 24, at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field. Live coverage for each game of the 2022 Patriot League Baseball Championship Series game will begin at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior second baseman Brendan Lowery’s sixth-inning grand slam erased a three-run deficit to lead No. 2 Bucknell to a 7-4 victory over No. 3 Lehigh to complete the series sweep on Sunday at Depew Field.
*Lowery went 1-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored, including the home run that plated four in the Bison’s five-run sixth inning.
*Senior RHP Austin Odell earned the victory, allowing three runs on five hits over 6.0 innings. He struck out eight and walked four. Senior
*Senior RHP Andrew Funovits picked up the save by throwing a scoreless ninth inning.
*Lehigh took an early lead as senior first baseman Joe Gorla single to drive in a run in the top of the third inning before sophomore catcher Andrew Nole hit a two-run homer in the fourth.
*Lowery put Bucknell in front with one swing, sending the bases loaded offering over the left-field fence. Sophomore shortstop Anthony Sherwin had an RBI single later in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-3.
*Lehigh sophomore shortstop Tyler Young brought the Mountain Hawks within one run in the eighth inning with an RBI double.
*In the bottom of the eighth, senior Kendall Pierson’s pinch-hit, RBI double and a sacrifice fly by junior centerfielder Kyle Lyons put the game out of reach at 7-4.
