2022 Patriot League Outdoor Track & Field Championship Day One Recap (5.6.22)

Navy men’s and women’s teams lead after six events

ANNAPOLIS, Md.  – The Navy men’s and women’s teams sit atop their respective leaderboards at the end of a rainy first day of competition at the 2022 Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Ingram Field at the U.S. Naval Academy.
 
The Midshipmen men have accumulated 93 points and hold an 18-point advantage over second-place Army West Point (75) through the first six events. Boston University is third with 17 points, with Bucknell totaling 14 points and Lehigh picking up 13 points on the first day. Colgate (10), Lafayette (7), American (4) and Holy Cross (1) round out the men’s field.
 
The Navy women’s squad earned 77 points through the first six events, with Army West Point placing second with 63 points. Boston University (34), Bucknell (23) and Holy Cross (14) make up the top five. Lehigh (11), Lafayette (6), Loyola Maryland (5) and American (1) round out the scoring through the first day.
 
Two Patriot League Championship Records Fall On First Day
Two Patriot League Outdoor Track and Field Championship records were broken during the first day of competition at Ingram Field. Boston University sophomore Daisy Liljegren won the women’s 10,000 meters in a time of 34:04.89, shattering the record of Navy’s Justine Whipple, who finished in 35:20.79 in 2007. Army West Point freshman Emily Fink won the women’s hammer throw with a record toss of 63.60 meters, surpassing the previous record of 61.77 meters set by Bucknell’s Maria Garcia in 2004.
 
Outdoor Track & Field Championships Conclude on Saturday
The men’s and women’s teams have completed six of the 22 events, while the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon are in progress and will conclude during the final day of competition on Saturday.

Women’s 10,000 Meters (*Patriot League Outdoor Championship Record)
Boston University sophomore Daisy Liljegren opened the meet by winning the women’s 10,000 meters with a Patriot League outdoor record time of 34:04.89. Liljegren’s graduate student teammate Corinne Batsu placed second in 34:14.73, while Navy senior Jessica Nangle earned bronze in 34:40.51.
 
Men’s 10,000 Meters
Navy senior Miguel Mathias claimed gold in the men’s 10,000 meters with a time of 30:20.65, with Army West Point junior Garrett Gough finishing close behind in 30:24.42 to earn silver. Navy senior Grant Van Valkenburg with a time of 30:30.64.
 
Women’s 4x800-Meter Relay
Lehigh’s quartet of Kara Bonner, Julia Dorley, Hetty McMillan and Jade Sessions won the women’s 4x800-meter relay with a time of 8:50.21. The Black Knights team of Shayla Bonzelet, Ever Elegon, Quinn Collins and Anna Tovkach finished in second place with a time of 9:01.05, with Navy placing third.
 
Men’s 4x800-Meter Relay
The Midshipmen team of David Nelsen, Ian Bartlett, Sean Casey and Ashwin Briggs edged Army West Point by less than five-tenths of a second to win the men’s 4x800-meter relay. The Mids finished in 7:30.13, while the Black Knights quartet of Michael Altenburg, Zachary Simon, Jeremiah Rasmussen and Luke Griner picked up silver with a time of 7:30.61.
 
Women’s Pole Vault
Holy Cross junior Annie Lineberger claimed gold in the women’s pole vault by clearing 3.94 meters. She won over Navy junior Charlene Morke (3.94m), who placed second, by clearing their first attempt at 3.79 meters. Army West Point sophomore Samantha Sheppard-Moore finished third by clearing 3.79 meters.
 
Men’s Pole Vault
Navy sophomore Walker Rudisaile won the men’s pole vault by clearing 5.18 meters, edging Army West Point sophomore Ethan Hesson (5.13m). Midshipmen senior Charles Dever collected a bronze medal with a vault of 5.03 meters.
 
Women’s Long Jump
Navy senior Katherine Halbert stood atop the medal stand after a leap of 5.74 meters in the women’s long jump. Bucknell senior Gianna Macones placed second with a distance of 5.65 meters, while Boston University sophomore Jules Hogan finished third with a leap of 5.60 meters.
 
Men’s Long Jump
Colgate freshman Cole Blair won the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.30 meters, while Navy sophomore Nahshon Houston’s jump of 7.15 meters was good for second place. Mids’ freshman Aidan Featherby placed third with a jump of 7.12 meters.
 
Women’s Hammer Throw (*Patriot League Outdoor Championship Record)
Army West Point freshman Emily Fink broke an 18-year-old Patriot League Outdoor Championship record with a hammer throw distance of 63.60 meters. The Black Knights swept the top three, with seniors Abigail Green (62.54m) and Emily Mikoud (61.26m) taking second and third, respectively.
 
Men’s Hammer Throw
Army West Point senior Marco Risi won the hammer throw for the second-consecutive season with a mark of 60.06 meters. Senior teammate Deven McNeal captured bronze with a heave of 59.79 meters, while Navy sophomore Joshua Boamah placed third with a throw of 58.57 meters.

Women’s Javelin
Navy claimed the top two spots in the women’s javelin throw, with senior Jadyn Tiracave winning with a distance of 44.87 meters and freshman Renny Murphy placing second with a mark of 42.75 meters. Army West Point sophomore Brooke Stratman finished third with a throw of 42.62 meters.
 
Men’s Javelin
Navy sophomore Braden Presser collected the gold medal with a throw of 69.46 meters. Army West Point junior Chris Barrett (65.44m) and Navy senior Hayden Fox (65.18m) placed second and third, respectively.
