Patriot League GEICO Men’s Basketball Players of the Week Announced (1.23.23)

Colgate’s Records and Holy Cross’s Batchelder claim weekly honors

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Colgate senior forward Keegan Records received Patriot League GEICO Men’s Basketball Player of the Week when the League office announced accolades on Monday. Holy Cross freshman guard Will Batchelder claimed rookie of the week honors for the second time this season.

Records collected GEICO Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the first time after averaging 18.0 points and 5.5 rebounds to help Colgate extend its winning streak against Patriot League opponents to 23 games, after defeating Holy Cross and American last week.

Batchelder was named GEICO Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. The freshman guard averaged 21.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists to help Holy Cross go 1-1 last week with a win over Bucknell.

Army West Point senior forward Chris Mann, Bucknell junior guard Jack Forrest, Holy Cross senior forward Gerrale Gates, Lehigh senior guard Evan Taylor Loyola Maryland graduate student guard Kenneth Jones and Navy senior guard Christian Jones all received honorable mentions for their performances last week.
 
The Patriot League men’s basketball players of the week are selected in a vote by League media members and each school’s sports information director, who are not eligible to vote for their student-athletes.

PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL GEICO PLAYER OF THE WEEK

*Records averaged 18.0 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 70 percent (16-of-23) from the field to help Colgate improve to 8-0 in League play and extend its winning streak against League opponents to 23 games.
*He scored 18 points and grabbed four rebounds in the Raiders’ 62-61 victory over American while blocking the Eagles’ potential game-winning layup attempt.
*He finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots in Colgate’s 77-71 win at Holy Cross last Wednesday.
 
PATRIOT LEAGUE MEN’S BASKETBALL GEICO ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Will Batchelder, Holy Cross, Fr., G, Newburyport, Mass./Governor’s Academy
*Batchelder averaged 21.0 points on 57 percent (13-of-23) shooting from the floor and 56 percent (9-of-16) from 3-point range to help Holy Cross go 1-1 last week with a victory over Bucknell.
*The freshman guard scored 20 points and grabbed three boards in the Crusaders’ loss against Colgate on Wednesday.
*He finished with a team-high 22 points, three rebounds and three assists in Holy Cross’s 80-73 win at Bucknell.

Chris Mann, Army West Point, Sr., F, Phillipsburg, Pa./Phillipsburg
*Mann scored a career-high 28 points on 11-of-15 shooting against Navy on Saturday. The senior forward averaged 15.0 points and 4.5 rebounds during the Black Knights’ two-game week.   
 
Jack Forrest, Bucknell, Jr., G, Lower Merion, Pa./Lower Merion
*Forrest averaged 19.5 points and 5.0 rebounds to help Bucknell split a pair of games last week, including a 68-66 victory over Army West Point. The junior guard matched his career-high 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range against the Black Knights.    
 
Gerrale Gates, Holy Cross, Sr., F, Charlotte, N.C./David W. Butler
*Gates averaged 16.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 2.0 steals to help Holy Cross go 1-1 last week with a victory over Bucknell (80-73). He recorded his ninth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds in addition to seven assists and two steals in the Crusaders’ loss to Colgate.

*Taylor averaged a double-double with 15.0 points and 12.0 rebounds to help Lehigh go 2-0 last week with wins over Loyola Maryland (74-70) and Lafayette (61-49). The senior guard finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots to help the Mountain Hawks hold off the Greyhounds on Monday night.

*Jones averaged 19.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists during Loyola Maryland’s two-game week. The graduate student guard scored a career-high 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting against Lehigh last Monday.

*Jones averaged 14.5 points on 67 percent (10-of-15) shooting from the field and 56 percent (5-of-9) from long range. He scored a career-high 21 points, connecting on 4-of-6 from deep in the Mids’ 77-71 victory at Army West Point.
