Patriot League Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week Announced (1.24.23)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Navy claimed four Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Weekly Awards when the League announced honors on Tuesday. Army West Point and Boston University each earned one.
 
Army junior Luke Griner was named Patriot League Indoor Men’s Track Athlete of the Week after posting a record-breaking, IC4A-qualifying time in the 800 meters. Mids’ senior Molly Mangan received Patriot League Women’s Track Athlete of the Week after running a Patriot League-best 54.80 in the 400 meters.
 
Navy senior Baynes Autrey collected Patriot League Men’s Field Athlete of the Week after a nationally ranked finish in the heptathlon that was the best in the Patriot League this season. Fellow Navy senior Molly Chapman was named women’s field athlete of the week after a first-place, ECAC-qualifying jump of 5.85 meters, giving her the best mark in the Patriot League this season.
 
Navy freshman Sophie Compton earned Patriot League Women’s Indoor Women’s Rookie of the Week by finishing second at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational with an ECAC qualifying time of 4:53.03 in the mile. Boston University freshman Logan Popelka was named Patriot League Men’s Rookie of the Week after three top-3 finishes in the 60 meters, 200 meters and 4x400-meter relay with times among the best run in the League this season.
 
American’s Kaden Kluth, Army West Point’s Aysia Salas, Bucknell’s Franco Perinotti, Colgate’s Cole Blair Lehigh’s Kerem Ayhan and Karen Hull, and Navy’s Sam Keeny all received honorable mentions for their performances last week.
 
Patriot League Men’s Track Athlete of the Week
Luke Griner, Army West Point, Jr., Middle Distance, Syracuse, Ind. / Wawasee
*Griner finished first at the Eagle Elite Invitational in the 800 meters with an IC4A-qualifying time of 1:49.13, which broke the 32-year-old Army’s program record. that lasted 32 years.
*His time is the fastest recorded in the Patriot League this season, is ranked 14th nationally, and set a facility record.
 
Patriot League Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
Molly Mangan, Navy, Sr. Sprints, Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon
* Mangan placed first in the 400 meters at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational with an ECAC-qualifying time of 54.80 seconds.
*This time is the fastest in the Patriot League this season and was .01 seconds away from breaking the Navy school record.

Patriot League Men’s Field Athlete of the Week
Baynes Autrey, Navy, Sr., Multis, Mountain Brook, Ala. / Mountain Brook,
*Autrey placed second in the heptathlon at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational, racking up 5,474 points to score the fourth-highest point total in Navy history.
*In addition to IC4A qualifying marks in his 60m hurdles and pole vault, Autrey’s 5,474 points give him the best finish in the Patriot League and the sixth-best finish in the country this season.

Patriot League Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
Molly Chapman, Navy, Sr., Sprints, Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County
*Finished fourth at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational in the long jump with an ECAC qualifying jump of 5.85m.
*Her jump is the longest in the Patriot League this season and is ranked fifth best in the event for Navy’s program.

Patriot League Men’s Rookie of the Week
Logan Popelka, Boston University, Fr., Sprints, Wylie, Tx. / Wylie High School
*Popelka earned three IC4A qualifying times at the Battle in Beantown meet in the 60 meters, 200 meters, and 4x400m relay placing fourth, second and second, respectively.
*His times for the 60 meters, 200 meters, and 4x400m relay earned him the third, first, and second fastest times in the Patriot League this season.
 
Patriot League Women’s Rookie of the Week
Sophie Compton, Navy, Fr., Middle Distance, San Diego, Ca./Point Loma
*In her first collegiate mile, Compton placed second at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational with a time of 4:53.03
*Her time qualifies for ECACs and is the third fastest mile ran in the Patriot League this season.

Honorable Mention
Sam Keeny, Navy, Jr., Distance, Annapolis, Md./ South River
*Keeny placed first at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational in the mile with an IC4A-qualifying time of 4:04.95, a personal best and the fastest mile time posted in the Patriot League this season.
 
Kerem Ayhan, Lehigh, Sr., Sprints, Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy
*Ayhan placed sixth in the 1000 meters at the Villanova Invitational with a IC4A-qualifying time of 2:24.41. He has the second fastest time in the Patriot League and broke Lehigh’s school record.
 
Karen Hull, Bucknell, Jr., Jumps/Hurdles, Randolph, N.J./Randolph
*Hull finished first in the 60-meter hurdles at the Gulden Invitational with an ECAC-qualifying time of 8.80 seconds. Her time is the fourth fastest time posted in the Patriot League this season.
 
Cole Blair, Colgate University, So., Jumps/Sprints, Georgetown, Tx. /East View
*Blair finished first in the long jump at the Ramapo College Season Opener with an IC4A-qualifying jump of 7.24m, the third-best in the Patriot League this season.
 
Franco Perinotti, Bucknell University, Sr., Pole Vault, Laurys Station, Pa. /Parkland
*Perinotti finished first at the Gulden Invitational in the pole vault clearing a IC4A height of 4.90m. His mark is tied for the second best in the Patriot League this season and is fifth all-time in the Bucknell program history.
 
Aysia Salas, Army, Jr., Throws, Silver City, Nm. /Silver
*Salas placed first at the Villanova Invitational in the shot put with an ECAC-qualifying throw of 13.95m, the third best in the Patriot League.
 
Kaden Kluth, American University, Fr., Distance, Portsmouth, R.I. /Portsmouth
*Kluth earned first place in the 800 meters at the Brant Tolsma Invitational with a IC4A-qualifying time of 1:51.45, which is the second fastest ran in the Patriot League this season and ranks second all-time in the event for American’s program.
