Patriot League Announces 2023-24 Indoor Track and Field Academic All-League Teams and Scholar-Athletes of the Year (3.1.24)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Boston University Terriers men’s and women’s programs took home both Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards in Indoor Track and Field when the results were announced on Friday. Sophomore Vera Sjöberg took home the women’s award, while fellow sophomore Freddy Collins earned the honor on the men’s side. Meanwhile, 38 student-athletes were awarded Academic All-Patriot League honors, with 19 honorees each for the men and women.
 
Sjöberg led all scorers at the 2023-24 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship garnering 30 points after sweeping the mile, 3,000 meters, and 5,000 meters races. She was the first Terrier in school history to sweep the distance races and earned Patriot League Women’s Indoor Track and Field Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet honors for her efforts. The English major carries a 3.96 cumulative GPA.

Collins, a First Team All-Patriot League runner, claimed gold in the 3,000-meter race and earned silver in the 5,000 meters. His 3,000m time of 8:02.00 established a new record at the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Stow, Mass. native carries a cumulative 3.67 GPA while pursuing a mechanical engineering degree at BU.

Men’s Academic All-League Breakdown
Boston University’s led all men’s institutions with four representatives on the 18-member Academic All-League team. American, Holy Cross and Navy followed closely behind with three representatives each, while Bucknell and Colgate each had two members. Lehigh and Lafayette rounded out the group with one representative a piece.
 
American’s Ethan Puc (International Studies | 3.72 GPA); Holy Cross’s Brian Fennelly (Chemistry | 3.83 GPA); and Navy’s Collin Greene (Chemistry | 3.71 GPA) each earned Academic All-League honors for the second time. The 16 remaining members each logged first-time honors.
 
Women’s Academic All-League Breakdown
Bucknell logged five Academic All-League members on the women’s team, the most across either gender, while Navy came in second with four members. Boston University, Lafayette, Lehigh, and Loyola each earned two honorees, while American and Army West Point each had one student-athlete represented.
 
Army West Point’s Joanna Halfhill (Physics | 4.26 GPA); Bucknell’s Meghan Quinn (Psychology | 3.66 GPA); Lafayette’s Julia Greeley (Civil and Environmental Engineering | 3.92 GPA); Lehigh’s Christina Yakaboski (Economics, Design | 3.95); and Navy’s McKenna Brophy (Ocean Engineering | 3.97 GPA), Emily Boutin (English | 3.77 GPA) and Annie Taylor (Mathematics | 4.00 GPA) are each appearing on the Academic All- League team for the second time in their respective careers.
 
Meanwhile, Ellie Abraham (History | 3.81 GPA) of Navy became just the sixth three-time Academic All-League honoree in Patriot League history.
 
The remaining 11 honorees earned Academic All-League for the first time.
 
2024 Patriot League Men’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year
 
Freddy Collins, Boston University, So., Stow, Mass./Nashoba Regional 
*Collins earned First Team All-Patriot League honors by winning gold at the Patriot League Championship with a 3,000m time of 8:02.00.
*The mark set a new League record at the Championship event.
*He also placed second in the 5,000m, leading to a total of 18 points for the Terriers.
*Collins is a Mechanical Engineering major and carries a 3.67 GPA. 
 
2024 Patriot League Women’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year 
Vera Sjöberg, Boston University, So., Stockholm, Sweden/Rudbeck 
*Sjöberg took home three gold medals after sweeping the distance races at the League Championships.
*The sophomore won the mile, 3,000m, and 5,000m, totaling 30 points for BU.
*She earned the Highest Point Scorer and Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet awards at this year’s Championships.
*The Stockholm native carries a 3.96 GPA and majors in English.

Voting for the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Men’s and Women’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year and Academic All-Patriot League Teams are conducted by the League men’s and women’s indoor track and field sports information directors.
 
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in their sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
