Army West Point Men, Boston University Women Lead After Day One of the Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships

ANNAPOLIS, MD. - The Army West Point men and Boston University women stand atop their respective leaderboards after the first day of the 2024-25 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships at Wesley A. Brown Fieldhouse at the United States Naval Academy. Five of the 18 events have been completed on the men’s side, while six of the 18 events have concluded for the women.

The Army West Point men’s team totaled 74 points through the first day of the championship, while Navy sits in second with 55. Bucknell (19), Colgate (14) and Lehigh (11) close out the top five. Lafayette (8), Boston University (6), American (5) and Holy Cross (3) round out the men’s team standings.

Boston University women’s team totaled 72 points after day one, with Army West Point and Navy tied for second with 53 points. Bucknell (19) and Lehigh (19) round out the top five. Holy Cross (11), Colgate (4), Lafayette (2), American (1) and Loyola (0) complete the women’s scoring after the first day of events.

Patriot League Records
Boston University junior Peace Omonzane established a new Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship record in the women’s long jump with a 6.20-meter mark. She holds the League indoor record in the long jump and triple jump (2024).

DAY ONE EVENT CAPSULES
POLE VAULT
Army West Point senior Brian McSweeney took home the gold medal in the men’s pole vault with a winning clearance of 5.10 meters. Midshipmen teammates Gunnar Kimball (5.00m) and Brian Schloeder (4.95m) earned silver and bronze, respectively.

Navy sophomore Helen Emerick finished first, clearing 3.95 meters and not missing a jump until her failure height. Lehigh junior Laura Reigle also cleared 3.95 meters, but had one miss early in the competition that gave Emerick the tiebreaker advantage. Navy freshman Aurora Cieslukowski took third in her collegiate debut, clearing 3.75 meters.
 
5,000 METERS
Navy swept the first distance race of the weekend behind senior Murphy Smith, who claimed his second consecutive gold medal in the men’s 5,000 meters, with a time of 14:04.85. Senior Alexander Kirkland finished second in 14:07.42, while junior Jackson Nguyen joined his fellow Mids on the podium with a third-place time of 14:08.72.

Boston University standout Vera Sjöberg won her second straight gold in the women’s 5,000 meters, while establishing a Wesley A. Brown facility record with a time of 16:21.28. Army West Point’s Charlotte Richman earned the silver medal with a time of 16:32.03, with fellow Black Knight Claire Lewis earning bronze in 16:45.05.
 
WEIGHT THROW
Boston University junior Ellie Roan won the weight throw for the second-consecutive season with a Patriot League season-best throw of 20.43 meters. Army West Point senior Emily Fink finished as the runner-up with a mark of 18.39 meters, while Bucknell senior Christine Ajao’s came in third with an 18.36-meter mark.

In the men’s competition, Army West Point junior Robby Manse secured the goal medal with a 19.85-meter mark. Fellow Black Knight Jonathan Segujja finished as the silver medalist with a mark of 18.63 meters, while Bucknell junior Aiden Tucker rounded out the podium with a 17.93-meter throw.
 
LONG JUMP
Colgate senior Cole Blair won gold with a 7.50-meter leap to close out the field events on day one of the 2025 Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Army West Point duo of Carlos Posey (7.46m) and Javan Guevara-Cragwell (7.30m) won silver and bronze, respectively.

Boston University junior Peace Omonzane claimed back-to-back gold medals in the women’s long jump with a Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Championship record leap of 6.20 meters. Another Terrier - senior Jamie Chamberlain - earned silver with a 5.97-meter mark. Army West Point senior Kalliauna Powers took home bronze with a 5.96-meter jump.
 
4X800-METER RELAY
Navy’s Dane Eike, Luke Nester, Carson Sloat and Matthew Newell clocked a time of 7:28.95 to earn gold in the 4x800 relay. Army West Point’s quartet of Jack Musgrave, Ammon Smith, Brady Smith and Kasen Jeitz earned silver with a time of 7:40.41. Lehigh logged a third-place finish in 7:43.02 behind the efforts of Daniel Malatesta, Thomas Smigo, Aidan Lynch and Ian Zalewski.
 
Army West Point won the women’s 4x800 behind the efforts of Hannah Andrews, Alma Lazo Cazares, Cherokee Chambers and Mikayla Cheney. The Black Knights’ group logged an 8:49.02 time. Navy’s quartet of Taylor Woodworth, Katelyn Pepin, Julia Blake and Alexandra Wercinski finished second with a time of 8:55.02. Boston University’s relay team of Leonni Griffin, Oliva Dobbs, Maura Woodland-Medenilla and Lily Borin came in third with a 9:03.56 time.  
 
WOMEN’S PENTATHLON
Boston University freshman Olivia Hughes took home the gold medal in her Patriot League Championship debut with 3,581 points. Hughes finished first in the high jump (1.64m) and shot pout (11.97m) events. Army West Point senior secured a second-place finish with a victory in the 800 meters run event, to earn 3,530 points. Holy Cross junior Celia Kulis, who won the 60-meter hurdles (8.58), finished in third with 3,398 points.
